Big fourth quarter leads to 73-70 victory

Tiffin University (1-2) picked up its first win of the season with a big fourth-quarter comeback, beating Lake Superior State on the road 73-70.

The Dragons enjoyed a 35-22 halftime edge as the Lakers were held to just 25 percent field goal shooting in the first half. Tiffin shot 41 percent and continued to expand its lead into the second half as the Dragons pushed their lead to 38-25 at the 7:44 mark of the third quarter.

The Lakers, though, went on an enormous run, outscoring TU 35-14 over the next 11 minutes to grab a 60-48 lead with 5:58 left in the game.

The Dragons refused to lose, responding with a 21-8 run over the next 5:30 to grab a slim 69-68 with just 31 seconds remaining.

After the Lakers got to the foul line and hit two shots, the Dragons found themselves behind 70-69 with 28 seconds left. The Dragons then hit four free throws over the closing seconds to escape with the three-point victory.

Savanah Richards had another big game, totaling 16 points with 5 rebounds and 6 steals to lead the team. Kirsten Williams finished with 15 points nad 4 assists.

Catara Dejarnette also reached double figures with 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Presley Feltner was busy inside, scoring 6 points but adding 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Tomi Hinkle also had 5 rebounds along with 4 points. 

Tiffin shot 42 percent from the floor while also connecting on 14 of 20 free throws. Richards and Williams combined to hit 10 of 14 shots from the charity stripe.

Tiffin also outscored the Lakers inside 32-16, including a 14-2 edge in second-chance points. TU also scored 18 points off 15 LSSU turnovers.

The Dragons will now take on Wayne State Nov. 17 at 5:30 pm.
