Dragons upset 9th-ranked Cedarville 83-70

Trailing 9th-ranked Cedarville by 12 points late in the third quarter, things looked like they were going south for Tiffin University in its big GMAC matchup with the Yellow Jackets.

But these Dragons refused to quit.

Rallying for a 42-17 run over the game's final 14 minutes, the Dragons (11-5, 11-5 GMAC) handed the Yellow Jackets (15-2, 15-2 GMAC) just their second loss of the season. 

The Dragons opened with fire in their eyes, blasting out on a 19-7 run to open the game.

But the Yellow Jackets never got rattled, responding with their own 15-2 run that put them ahead 22-21 with 6:37 left in the second quarter. Cedarville finished out the half with a 13-9 run that put them ahead 35-30 at the break.

Cedarville continued their hot streak at the start of the third quarter, opening with an 18-11 run that put them ahead by 12 points with 4:23 left in the period. 

Then the collapse started, as the Dragons exploded for a 13-2 run that got them to within a point at 55-54 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Dragons shot 69 percent in the third quarter and 75 percent in the final period while holding Cedarville to just 33 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter. Tied at 57-57 with 8:51 to play, the Dragons continued their hot shooting to post a 16-7 run and jump ahead by 10 points with 3:09 left in the game. TU held the Yellow Jackets off the rest of the way for the win.

TU was led by a brilliant effort from Savanah Richards, who totaled 30 points on 11 for 14 shooting with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Aarion Nichols added 16 points with 7 rebounds, and Jada Tate racked up a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kirsten Williams also hit double figures with 10 points.

Overall the Dragons shot 57 percent in the game while holding CU to 46 percent. They held a 15-8 edge at the free throw line and a commanding 34-24 edge in rebounding, outscoring CU 50-30 in the paint.
