Chargers Overcome Dragons with Big Second Half

TIFFIN, Ohio - After leading by six at halftime, Tiffin women's basketball was unable to hold off Hillsdale College late as the Chargers came from behind to take a 74-65 victory.

The Dragons did not shy away from the G-MAC preseason #1 Chargers, matching them bucket for bucket for most of the game. With the loss, Tiffin falls to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the G-MAC.

Hillsdale had a three-point lead entering the second quarter, but it was quickly erased as as the Dragons went on an 11-3 run to take a 27-22 lead on a Jensen Hiegel bucket at the 5:12 mark. The Chargers countered with a triple, but back-to-back scores from Jasmine Watts and Aarion Nichols built the Tiffin lead up to six, 31-25. Six would be the margin at halftime, as Georgia Perrott-Hunt converted a layup in the final seconds to send TU into the break with a 35-29 lead.

Tiffin still held on to a 45-38 lead midway through the third quarter, but Hillsdale's Brittany Gray knocked down three triples in a span of two minutes to help put the Chargers in the lead, 50-48. Another Hillsdale three, from Grace Anderson this time, gave the visitors a 53-50 lead entering the final stanza.

The Dragons quickly grabbed the lead back, going up 56-53 after Annie Santucci knocked down a pair of free throws. However, a 13-6 run tilted the advantage back to the Chargers, who were able to hold the lead and eventually take the nine-point victory.

In her first start, Watts had the best game of her young career, leading the Dragons with a career-high 11 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Santucci and Perrott-Hunt were also in double figures with 10 points apiece.

Allie Dewire led all scorers with 21 points for Hillsdale.

TU struggled mightily in the game from beyond the arc, going just 4-24 (16.7%) while Hillsdale made 10-26 (38.5%). The Chargers also outrebounded the Dragons 44-32.

Tiffin continues its five-game homestand to open conference play next Thursday when they host Kentucky Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m. in the Gillmor Center.
