Dragons down McKendree, split in spring opener

Tiffin University (1-1) split on day one of their 2023 season, defeating McKendree 8-4 while falling to Illinois-Springfield 16-0 at the Music City Games in Smyrna, Tennessee.

In the win against McKendree, Isabella St. Peter got the win, tossing 6 innings of 4-hit ball. She allowed 2 earned runs and overcame 6 walks in the outing.

In the first inning, Maddie Woods tripled and came home on Katie Deardorff's single to make it 1-0.

In the second, TU struck again. Michelle Rodkey walked and Caitlin Wilson singled. An error in right field allowed one run to score. After Woods singled to load the bases, Deardorff drove in another run with a single.

TU gave itself some breathing room with three runs in the third inning. Molly Koesters singled and an error by the pitcher put TU with runners at the corners. Another error from shortstop allowed a run to score, and a subsequent wild pitch put runners on second and third for the Dragons. A groundout to second base scored another run, with Wilson then scoring on a wild pitch to push TU's lead to 6-2.

TU scored its final runs in the fifth inning. Koesters singled, and an error at third base in the next at-bat allowed her to score. Wilson then singled, Taylor Whalen walked, and a fielder's choice let another run in.

Overall Rodkey had 3 hits, while Koesters had 2. Deardorff had 2 hits and 2 RBI, while Bailey Hamilton also had 2 RBI.

In the opener, the Dragons managed just five hits as they fell behind 8-0 after two innings. 

Claire Feldkamp took the loss, allowing 4 earned runs in one inning. Shelbey Spurlock followed with 3.2 innings of work, allowing 5 earned runs. 

Wilson had the lone extra base hit with a double.
