Dragons Keep Rolling With Sweep of Malone

Dragons Keep Rolling With Sweep of Malone

TIFFIN, Ohio - After cruising through the first two sets, it took a thrilling come-from-behind win in set three for Tiffin University women's volleyball to complete the 3-0 sweep of Malone University on Tuesday evening. The Dragons have now won six consecutive matches, improving their record to 8-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the GMAC. With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 5-6 on the year and 1-2 in the conference.

Tiffin registered 20 more kills (52-32) and 20 more digs (89-69) than Malone, lending to a significant advantage in attack percentage, as the Dragons hit .230 as a team compared to just .087 for the Pioneers. Individually, Jenna Huffman (11 kills, .346 hitting percentage) and Amanda Curry (10) each registered double-digit kills, while Emily Weithman (26) and Loryn Huffman (23) each notched over 20 assists. Loryn Huffman also had a very impressive defensive game, tallying 22 digs. Jenn Huffman led the team with four total blocks.

The Dragons came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, scoring the first four points of the match and flying out to 13-5 lead. Malone managed to cut the deficit to 16-10, but four straight kills by Tiffin, including three from Amanda Curry, pushed the Dragon lead up to ten at 20-10. A few points later, a Jenna Huffman kill sealed the deal as Tiffin took the first set, 25-15.

Set two was very similar to the opening set as the Dragons once again built an early advantage, going up 10-4. A pair of service aces from Sam Fallis bumped the Dragon lead up to 13-6, but the Pioneers responded with a small run to cut the deficit back down to five, 14-9. Tiffin responded with four unanswered points punctuated by a Curry kill to go up by nine, and the Dragons would cruise from there to take the second set by the same score as the first, 25-15.

As easy as the first two sets were for the Dragons, set three was the opposite as Malone came out of the break with a 7-3 run that included four Tiffin errors. After a Dragon timeout, Tiffin came back out with a renewed energy and tallied five kills in a row, one by Grace Schreiber, three from Kyley Keene, and the last off the swing of Sydney Gilland. That 8-7 lead was very short-lived, however, as the Pioneers responded with four unanswered and an eventual 8-3 run to go back up by four, 15-11. Not to be outdone, the Dragons seesawed back with a rally of their own, as a Kendall Hellyer kill capped four-straight points and tied the score up at 15 apiece. The remainder of the set could only be described as the ultimate back-and-forth battle, as neither team was able to score two points in a row until Malone went up 24-23 on a Brooklyn Sullivan kill and Curry attack error.

With the third set hanging in the balance, Keene unleashed a rocket for a kill to tie it back up at 24 and receive a roar from the Dragon crowd. After a Malone kill gave the Pioneers their second set point opportunity, a service error into the net and huge block from Gilland and Schreiber flipped the set point and the match point in favor of the Dragons, 26-25. The teams traded points to give Tiffin their second opportunity to end the match, and the Dragons would not disappoint this time as Jenna Huffman pounded down a kill to take the third and final set 28-26.

Tiffin will now take their undefeated conference record on the road this weekend, as the Dragons travel to Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday night and Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday afternoon.
