Dragons split at GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament

The Tiffin University volleyball team opened up the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament with a victory over Saint Joseph's College, but fell in the night cap to the Missouri S&T Miners.

Tiffin vs. Saint Joseph's College Pumas

Tiffin got off to a hot start in set one, pushing their lead to 5-1. The Pumas returned fire, making a 6-1 run to take a 7-6 lead.The two sides continued to trade kills throughout the set, but it was a late service error by Saint Joseph's that gave Tiffin a 25-23 win.

Set two looked like the remake of set one, with Tiffin leading early, and then the Pumas making a run to regain the lead. Saint Joseph's continued to lead late in the set, but Tiffin made a 13-5 run to take set two 25-20. 

The final set was just as tight and contested as the prior sets. The Pumas had more kills and a higher hitting percentage than Tiffin, but the Pumas' errors came back to haunt them, making seven in the set. Tiffin took advantage and cruised to a 25-22 win.

Tiffin hit at a .194 clip in the match, with the Pumas hitting at a .216 mark, and had nine more kills than the Dragons. The difference in the game came from the mistakes the Dragons didn't make, committing seven less attack errors and five less service errors than the Pumas. Tiffin was superior from the service line, collecting six service aces. 

Individually, Olivia Cobb packed a punch, pounding 14 kills with a .444 hitting percentage. Jenna Huffman had six kills and assisted on six blocks. Taylor Lattimore had three service aces and led Tiffin with 11 digs.

Tiffin vs. Missouri S&T Miners

The mistakes the Dragons avoided in their earlier win, turned out to be an issue in the Dragons' matchup with Missouri S&T.

Tiffin dropped set one 25-18, committing seven attack errors. The Miners hit .345 in the set with only two attack errors.

The Dragons rebounded in set two, coming from behind to even the match with a 25-18 win. In the set, Tiffin trailed 4-1, but roared ahead with a 16-6 run to lead 17-10. Tiffin hit .368 in the set with only four attack errors.

Missouri S&T regained the lead with a 25-17 3rd set win. The Dragons endured their worst set of the match, committing nine attack errors and only hitting .054.

The tale of two sets continued in the 4th set, with the Dragons reverting back to their 2nd set style of play. Tiffin never trailed in the set, handing the Miners a 25-15 4th set loss. TU compiled 16 kills and a .448 hitting percentage.

The final set was a nail biter, with the Dragons storming out of the gates to an early 6-2 lead. The Miners bounced back with a 6-0 run to lead 8-6. Tiffin managed to fight back and tie the score at 11-11, but three straight kills by the Miners put the final nails in the coffin. 

As a team, the Dragons smacked 66 kills, but made 27 attack errors, compared to only 14 from their match against Saint Joseph's. Tiffin scuffled at the service line as well, committing seven service errors. 

Individually, Olivia Cobb kept the train rolling, pouring in 20 kills and adding 19 digs. The 20 kills are the highest individual total for any player this season. Jenna Huffman set a new career high with a 14 kill performance, Kasey Adelsperger added 12 kills, and Danielle Hicks chipped in with 11 kills. Emily Weithman dished out a season high 54 assists, and Taylor Lattimore finished with 32 digs.

The split moves the Dragons to 11-9 overall.
