Grine, Mason punch ticket to National Championships

Two Tiffin University grapplers earned spots at the NCAA Division II National Championships, winning Region Championships in the process.

Trey Grine (149 pounds) and Nicholas Mason (197) both made strong statements in winning their weight divisions at the Regional tourney held at West Liberty University.

Grine opened with a strong 16-0 win over Lake Erie, then posted a pin over Ashland in 4:50 before knocking off Findlay in the title match 8-1.

Mason, meanwhile, started off with a 7-2 win over Findlay and a 7-0 shutout of Wheeling Jesuit before winning the championship in style with a powerful pin of West Liberty in 5:53.

Beau Minnick came up just short of Nationals, finishing 4th at 157 pounds. Minnick fell by fall to Findlay in 4:36 but bounced back with a narrow 3-2 win over Ashland and a big 15-4 win over Urbana. In the decisive third place match, Minnick had another slim loss, falling 4-3 to Lake Erie.

TU also had two fifth place finishers. Richard Screptock (165) got a win via fall in 4:50 over West Liberty but then fell to Lake Erie 5-4 in a slim decision. After a 17-0 tech fall over Urbana, Screptock had another narrow 7-4 loss in a tiebreaker to Bellarmine. He then won the fifth place match 6-5 over Lake Erie.

At 184 pounds, Hayden Bronne got an 8-3 win over West Liberty but then fell 3-2 to Indianapolis and a close 5-0 loss to Wheeling Jesuit. He downed Ashland in the fifth place match by fall in 46 seconds.

The final placer for TU was Bryan LaVearn at 174 pounds. LaVearn fell to Bellarmine 9-2, then pinned West Liberty in 4:25 and nipped Lake Erie 3-2. LaVearn fell to Ashland 7-3, and finished 6th with a 10-5 loss to Bellarmine.
