Dragons split on day one in Florida

Tiffin University (2-5) split on day one in Florida, beating Assumption 8-6 before falling to Bridgeport 10-5.

Against Assumption, the Dragons scored go-ahead runs in the sixth inning, tacked on three more in the 7th inning, and then held on to close out the game with the tying run at the plate for the victory.

Sarah Klein started and went 4.2 innings, allowing 2 earned runs with 4 strikeouts, while Claire Feldkamp got the win in relief. She tossed 2.1 innings and allowed 2 earned runs.

In the first inning, Taylor Whalen singled and was followed by Maddie Woods's walk and Kaylee Savage's single to lead the bases. Aubrie Harper then hit a sac fly to plate TU's first run.

In the fourth, Harper doubled and an error on Faith Renwick's grounder to short let the run in. Hallie Sheehan then singled with Bailey Hamilton and Whalen following with walks to make the score 3-0, TU.

Assumption broke through in the fifth inning for three runs to vault ahead of TU 4-3 but the Dragons responded in the sixth. Renwick reached on an error at short, while Sheehan then also reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and a groundout by Whalen brought in a run. Woods then doubled to make the score 5-4 for the Dragons.

TU got big insurance runs in the 7th. Kirsten Georges reached on a fielder's choice while Alyssa Gettys and Sheehan followed with walks. A single from Whalen followed by an error at shortstop let two runs score. Woods then followed with another single to make it 8-4 heading to the bottom of the 7th.

Assumption tallied two runs to make it 8-6 and had the tying run at the plate with two outs but a fielder's choice ended the game for the Dragons.

Whalen finished with 2 hits and 3 RBI along with 2 walks, while Woods had 2 hits for 2 RBI and a double. Overall TU had 7 hits and 9 walks.

Against Bridgeport, four Dragons pitchers combined to allow 9 hits and 9 walks along with 4 unearned runs in the loss. Isabella St. Peter took the loss, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing 2 earned runs. Shelbey Spurlock started and went 3 innings, allowing 4 earned runs. 

Kaylee Savage drilled a home run to tie the score 1-1 at the end of the first inning.

TU made it 3-1 in its favor when Harper also smacked a home run, and Georges tripled and then scored on a passed ball.

Bridgeport scored three runs in the third inning and another in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Georges singled and Hamilton reached on an error at second base. Whalen then walked, and a passed ball let a run in. Woods then also walked, with Savage taking another free pass to tie the score 5-5.

Bridgeport took a lead it would not give up with 5 runs in the fifth inning, four of them unearned.

Georges had 2 hits for TU with a triple, while Savage had a home run and 2 RBI. Harper also had a solo shot.
