Huge TU comeback sends Dragons to championship game

Tiffin University (13-2-3) staged a huge comeback over the final 20 minutes, defeating Ashland in the G-MAC Semifinals 5-2.

The Dragons will face Lake Erie, who defeated Thomas More 5-4 in penalty kicks after battling to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes. The championship will be played at 12 pm Nov. 11 at Paradiso Fields.

For TU, the game started in fine fashion, as Caleb Gibbons scored in the 17th minute off a pass from Zach Garcia to make it 1-0.

The Eagles, however, responded by taking control of the game offensively and defensively. A goal from Oliver Whaley in the 23rd minute equalized the game and made the score 1-1 at the half. The Eagles, however, outshot TU 9-3 in the half.

Whaley scored another goal in the 49th minute to put Ashland ahead 2-1 as the Eagles continued to pepper TU goalkeeper Felix Graf with shots. At one point, the Eagles held a 15-3 shot edge late in the second half.

In the 71st minute, however, Noah Purtz came off the bench and quickly knocked a goal in the back of the net to tie the score 2-2. That goal opened the floodgates, as TU added three more goals over the next 15 minutes to put the game away.

Chewe Mukuka scored an unassisted goal in the 80th minute to put TU ahead 4-2, and Purtz added a second goal off a pass from Gibbons in the 86th minute.

TU's final goal came from Lars Van Der Vlugt, who took a pass from Malvin Gblah and scored in the 88th minute.

All of TU's second-half goals came from players off the bench.

Graf got the win in goal, making 4 saves over 90 minutes.

Overall Ashland outshot TU 15-8.
