Brandon Burks is enjoying his second tour of Tiffin.

Burks initially went to TU in 2017, enjoying a dominant first season at linebacker that saw him register 91 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and an interception. He was named Second Team All GLIAC that season.

But the lure of Division I football called to Burks, and he transferred to Eastern Michigan University, where he played in 12 games in 2019 and made 23 tackles. But something didn't feel right.

"After having some success here at Tiffin, I went to EMU," said Burks. "It just didn't feel like home, though. So I came back."

He came back in a big way, landing First Team All GMAC honors in 2020-21 as he led Tiffin's top-ranked defense to its second GMAC championship in a row.

"The spring season was important for him," said TU Head Coach Cris Reisert. "He got seasoning within our scheme. He got more comfortable in his role with the team and a different player emerged. We are excited to see what he can do this fall."

While continuing his on-field excellence, Burks has developed into a leader, serving as a team captain and helping the defense come together in the fall of 2020 while enduring Covid-19 restrictions.

"He brings a calming influence to the defense," said Reisert. "He tries to help everyone and relates to the players very well. He gets everyone on the same page."

While sharing the goals this season of winning a third straight GMAC title, reaching the NCAA playoffs, and perhaps winning a national championship, he also savors what the team has already accomplished and what it means to all Dragons football fans, especially alums.

"There are a lot of alumni that appreciate the success we have had the last few years," said Burks. "Many of them didn't get to experience what we have, so they are enjoying it through us. Winning those titles was something we did for everyone associated with the program."

The Dragons will need to take care of business on the field, taking on one of their toughest schedules ever.

"I'm excited by our schedule," said Burks. "Indianapolis, Truman State, Ashland. We haven't played these teams in a while. Our goal is to win every game and get that national championship. That is why I came back."
