Baseball Opens NCAAs in Ashland Regional

The NCAA Regional brackets have been revealed, and Tiffin baseball will be headed to the Ashland regional as the eight-seed in Midwest Regional #1, facing the top-seeded Eagles on Thursday, May 16 at 3:30 p.m.

Other teams in the Ashland regional are four-seed Northwood and five-seed Bellarmine. While Ashland is the host, the games will be played at Schoonover Stadium on the campus of Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. On the other side in Midwest Regional #2 at Illinois-Springfield, the programs that made the field are UIS (#2), Wayne State (#3), Quincy (#6), and Drury (#7).

Making their first-ever trip to the NCAA postseason and riding a six-game win streak, the Dragons (24-29) will open with a team that they fell to twice during the early portion of the regular season, as the Eagles (41-11) defeated TU in Florida on March 3 and at Ashland on March 13. As was evident in the conference championship, however, Tiffin has proven that regular-season results do not matter in the slightest, as the Dragons defeated Ohio Dominican and Kentucky Wesleyan (twice) after those two teams went a combined 7-1 against TU prior to postseason play.

Ashland reached the postseason via the GLIAC automatic qualifier after defeating Saginaw Valley State 8-2 in the GLIAC title game. Northwood fell to Saginaw Valley in the GLIAC semifinals, but earned an at-large berth with a 33-19 overall record. Bellarmine (also 33-19) is the third and final automatic qualifier in the Midwest Region, as the Knights made a run similar to Tiffin's in the GLVC Tournament, coming in as the seven-seed and going 4-0 against the #1, #2, #4, and #6 seeds to claim the title.

The two Midwest Regional sites will play in double-elimination format (similar to the GMAC Championship) from May 16-18. The teams that make it out of each site will advance to the Super Regionals to face each other in a best-of-three series May 24-25. The winner of that series will then move on to the Division II Baseball Championship finals, where they will battle with the winners of the other seven super-regionals to crown a national champion.
