Dragons picked 6th nationally with 7 grapplers ranked

Tiffin University's women's wrestling team continues to garner national attention.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association recently announced the pre-season individual and tournament team rankings for the NCAA women. This is the second season that the NWCA has sponsored a poll for the NCAA Women's division. The Dragons were picked 6th in the nation overall, with 7 individual wrestlers ranked in their respective weight classes.

Simon Fraser was the top picked team with 97 points followed by McKendree's 92. Emmanuel (67) was third, just ahead of King (66) while North Central totaled 49 points. Tiffin had 45, finishing ahead of Colorado Mesa (40) and Augsburg (39).

Last season, the women enjoyed an incredible amount of success in just their second season as an official sport at Tiffin. Ranked as high as fifth in the nation during the year, the Dragons had seven different athletes earn 11 All-American honors between the WCWA National Championships in February and the WCWC Championship in March.

Sugey Ceja (109 pounds) was the top ranked individual wrestler, placing 3rd. Sugey had one of the top seasons on the squad, landing WCWC All American honors with a runner-up finish while also garnering WCWA All American plaudits with a 3rd place mark. She led the team with 362 points while also going 24-12 with a team best 55 two-point near falls along with 24 takedowns, 7 escapes, and 7 pins. 

Jessie Lee (191) was next, landing a ranking of 4th. Jessie earned WCWC All American status with a 5th place finish while also earning WCWA All American honors with a 6th place finish. She went 20-14 overall with 23 takedowns, 6 pins, and a team best 14 escapes. 

Two Dragons were ranked 5th, with Trinity Oredina (101) and Eunique Davis (130) getting attention. Trinity earned WCWC All American honors with a 5th place finish and had one of the top records on the team at 19-7, while also managing 11 takedowns, 3 escapes, 8 pins, and 255 total points. Eunique earned WCWA All American honors with a 5th place finish, while also earning WCWC All American honors with an 8th place finish, posting a 15-12 record with 18 takedowns, 3 escapes, and 3 pins.

Taylor Hites (155) was ranked 6th, while Shanna Morris (116) and Stephanie Mondragon (123) ranked 8th. Taylor earned WCWA All American honors with a 5th place mark while also landing WCWC All American honors with a 7th place finish. Taylor had one of the top seasons on the team, leading with a 25-15 record along with a team best 25 takedowns, 11 reversals, and 11 pins. She was second on the team with 351 points. Shanna earned WCWC All American honors with an 8th place finish, while Mondragon had five wins with 4 takedowns and 3 escapes.
