Dragons Battle Tough Competition at BGSU Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Tiffin University women's tennis team competed at a high-level tournament over the weekend, facing multiple NCAA Division I schools at the Bowling Green Invitational. The Dragons played matches against three DI squads (Bowling Green, Toledo, and Detroit-Mercy) and local DII rival Ashland. 

Abbie-Jade Riley had another very strong showing for Tiffin, going 2-1 in singles play in the No. 1 bracket. As the 7-seed, Riley easily handled 10-seed Ashland 6-1, 6-2 in her opening match, before taking down 2-seed Toledo in a thrilling 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 decision to reach the semifinals. In the semis, she put up a good fight against 3-seed BGSU, but fell 6-4. 6-4. 

As the 8-seed also in the top bracket, Anais Geslin defeated 9-seed Ashland 6-0, 6-1 in her opening match before falling to top overall seed BGSU in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Geslin defeated Detriot-Mercy in a tightly contested 8-7 (3) affair before falling to Toledo. 

Seeded seventh in the No. 2 bracket, Juliette Sirgent defeated 10-seed Ashland 6-3, 7-5 before falling to 2-seed Toledo in the quarterfinals. Sirgent came back in the consolation to knock off another Ashland competitor, but was eliminated by 5-seed Toledo.

In the No. 3 bracket, sixth-seed Milah Ryland took down 11-seed Ashland 7-5, 6-2 in her opening match before falling to 3-seed Toledo in the quarterfinals. Ryland would rebound to win two matches in the consolation bracket, defeating Ashland 8-1 and BGSU 8-0, before falling to Ashland's eighth-seeded entry. 

In top doubles, 8-seed Sirgant and Prince took down 7-seed Ashland before falling to the top overall doubles team and eventual tournament champions from BGSU in the quarters. Despite the loss, Sirgant and Prince rallied to take down a pair of Ashland duos to win the consolation bracket.

The Dragons will now enjoy a couple of weeks off before heading to the Northwest Ohio Invitational Sept 29-30.
