Dragons win Ohio Northern Invitational

Led by six first-place finishes, Tiffin University won the Ohio Northern Invitational.

The Dragons finished 1st of 14 teams, easily outpointing Ohio Northern 219-166.5. Dubuque was third with 113.5 points.

Anthony Aniciete took the crown at 125 pounds. He posted four straight wins, beating Otterbein by tech fall 18-3, Dubuque by major decisions of 12-0 and 18-4, and finally Lycoming 15-8 for the title.

Max Shore (133) also got a title with five wins. He beat Otterbein 18-3, pinned Ohio Wesleyan in 55 seconds, posted another fall over Dubuque in 22 seconds, blasted past Adrian 17-1, and shut out Mount St. Joseph 9-0 for the title.

Zack Donathan (141) saw his first action of the year and got a championship. He had three straight pins over Ohio Northern in 1:16, Hiram in 46 seconds, and Mount St. Joseph in 1:10. He then shut out Adrian 15-0 before closing out his weight class with a close 6-2 win over Adrian.

Casey Barnett (157) also got a championship for the Dragons. He opened with a 17-0 tech fall over Washington & Jefferson and then got back-to-back pins over Dubuque in 2:44 and Olivet in 2:24. After a major decision 12-2 over Heidelberg, he won the title with a narrow 7-3 win over teammate Gavin Owens.

David Davis (174) gave TU their fifth title of the day. He beat Otterbein 18-3 and then posted wins over Ohio Wesleyan 16-9, Heidelberg 16-7, and Ohio Northern 8-3.

Lucas Salmon (184) won Tiffin's final title at ONU, opening with a pin over Adrian in 3:55. He then shut out Olivet 17-0, outpointed Adrian 15-4, and won it with a hard fought 7-2 win over Heidelberg.

Clayton Ours (285) had a 2nd-place finish. He pinned Adrian in 2:04 and then beat Olivet 12-1. After two pins over Muskingum in 2:56 and Ohio Northern in 2:49, Ours came up just short in the title bout, falling 9-8.

Elijah Hunter (149) also took second. He won four straight bouts, defeating Mount St. Joseph 17-2, Heidelberg 18-1, Ohio Northern by fall in 1:05, and Washington & Jefferson 7-4. In the title bout against Olivet, he lost 14-3.

Gavin Owens (157) was runner-up, getting wins over Dubuque in 2:03, Ohio Wesleyan in 58 seconds, Ohio Northern in 2:13 and over Arellano in 55 seconds. His lone loss was to teammate Barnett 7-3.

Jakob Hurley (165) was another runner-up. He reached the finals with wins over Otterbein in 4:30, Mount St. Joseph in 3:45, Olivet 11-2, and Dubuque 12-7. He fell in the title bout to Dubuque 6-4.

Emilio Arellano (157) finished 3rd while winning five bouts. He had wins over Heidelberg 20-3, Lycoming 17-4 and Otterbein by fall in 5:37. After a fall via pin in 55 seconds and advancing by no contest over Heidelberg, he won over Heidelberg 15-0 for third place. 

Jake Noon (197) finished 3rd also. He had a tech fall 18-3 win over Olivet before losing 26-14 to Heidelberg. He then bounced back for four straight wins, defeating TU's Dean Hetrick 18-3, Lycoming 18-3, medical forfeit over Dubuque, and finally Ohio Northern also by medical forfeit.

Frankie Depinet (133) was TU's final placer, taking 8th. He had wins over Heidelberg in 1:59 and Ohio Wesleyan in 2:03.

Also getting wins at ONU were Mason Amodio (141) over Hiram 14-6; Iain Escobar (149) over Otterbein 9-6 in sudden victory; Brayden Benson (174) over Lycoming 19-2 and Hiram 18-10; Carson Steinmetz (174) 14-7 over Dubuque and 9-8 over Otterbein; and Dean Hetrick (197) 11-2 over Alma.
