Dragons have strong showing at Del Rosa Open

Tiffin Univesity had numerous strong showings at the Del Rosa Intercollegiate Open held at Case Western Reserve.

Tiffin was 4th of 25 teams in the Open Division while taking 1st of 29 teams in the Freshmen-Sophomore Division.

In the Open Division, TU had four placers. Casey Barnett was tops in 2nd place at 157 pounds, posting a pin over Ithaca in 1:23, a 19-3 win, and a pin in 5:24 over John Carroll. His lone loss came in the title match in a 12-0 loss to Lake Erie.

Clayton Ours was 4th at 285 pounds, opening with pins over John Carroll in 40 seconds and Davis & Elkins in 1:18. He also had a close 8-6 win over Glenville State before dropping the final match by medical forfeit.

Elijah Hunter (157) also was 4th. He had an 8-5 win over Indianapolis but then dropped matches to Lake Erie 17-1 and to John Carroll by pin in 4:03.

Lucas Salmon (184) took 5th, bouncing back after an 8-5 loss to win three straight matches. He beat Glenville State 13-4, pinned Seton Hill in 1:00, and then won 4-1.

In the Freshman bracket, TU had four champions. Anthony Aniciete (125) posted a pin over Utica in 2:08, a pin over Ithaca in 4:45, and a 4-1 decision. 

Gavin Owens (157) also won, pinning John Carroll in 1:06, then posting three strong decisions over Gannon 21-5, Tiffin 11-1, and Gannon 16-1.

Jakob Hurley (165) also took first, posting three straight wins to open competition. He beat Utica in 1:58, Seton Hill in 3:52, and Ithaca in 1:51. He then won close bouts with Indianapolis 6-4 and Ohio 4-2.

Nolan Gessler (149) was the final champion, opening with a 15-0 win then pinning Ashland in 32 seconds. He outpointed Glenville State 11-9, Cleveland State 14-0, and Ashland 7-2.

Max Shore (125) took second, getting wins by 15-0 over Glenville State and 19-3 over Lake Erie before pinning RIT in 42 seconds.

Tiffin had 3rd place marks from Dean Hetrick (197) and Emilio Arellano (157). Hetrick had a pin in 1:05 over Notre Dame and a 16-5 win over John Carroll. He then lost by fall to Ohio in 5:50 before beating Gannon by fall in 2:02. Arellano, meanwhile, had a pin in 4:26 over Utica and then beat Cleveland State 9-6 and Indianapolis 12-5. He then fell in two matches to Tiffin 11-1 and Ithaca in 2:05.

Brayden Benson (174) was fourth. He also outpointed his opponents in his first three matches (19-3 over RIT, 16-6 over Case Western, 4-1 over Ashland). He then fell to Cleveland State 16-3 and West Liberty in 1:44.

David Davis (165) placed fifth. After losing by fall to Mount Union in 43 seconds, he beat John Carroll 11-6. After falling to Ohio 11-4, he won three straight 10-4 over Mount Union, by fall in 4:06 over Seton Hill, and 9-5 over Ithaca.

The final placer was Mason Amadio at 141 pounds. He shutout Utica 8-0 before getting pinned by Glenville State in 6:41. He then beat RIT 6-3 and Gannon 5-3 before getting pinned by RIT in 2:47.

Other wins were picked up by Carson Steinmetz (174) 13-6 over Akron and Frank Depinet (133) by fall in 6:04 over Wheeling.
