Tiffin University's Garrett Gray won his third consecutive Midwest Region championship, dominating the 285 pound division, while TU also sent four other wrestlers to the NCAA National Championships by virtue of Top 4 finishes.
Gray joins Trey Grine (3rd at 141), Michael Screptock (3rd at 149), Sam Viengmany (4th at 157), and Jared Chambers (4th at 184) in making the Nationals cut.
Gray simply stampeded through his weight class, pinning Ashland in 6:58 and Indianapolis in 5:41 for the title. He will be makng his third trip to Nationals after finishing 4th in 2015.
Grine bounced back from a narrow 2-1 loss to post a 16-0 major decision and a 6-2 win against Ashland to take third place.
Screptock followed a similar path, falling to Findlay 6-0 but bouncing back to pin his next opponent in 1:07 before sneaking past Ashland 3-2 to take third. He will be making his third consecutive trip to Nationals after finishing 4th last year.
Viengmany had a busy day to land his spot. He posted a 12-4 major decision followed by another strong showing in a 12-4 major decision against Lake Erie but then lost a close one 8-6 to Limestone. He won his final match 3-2 to secure his spot, the third trip for him as well to Nationals.
Chambers also gutted out a clutch series of wins. He posted a 5-3 win and then lost a tough one 1-0 to Lake Erie before bouncing back to post a 9-1 major decision against Wisconsin-Parkside and then a 7-4 tiebreaker decision against Parkside to finish 4th. This will be his first trip to Nationals.
Kevin Christman had a tough luck day at the regional, opening with a 2-1 win against Indianapolis and an 11-8 win over Parkside but then fell in two razor thin matches 2-0 to Lake Erie and 3-1 in overtime in his final match. He finished 5th overall.
As a team, TU finished 5th of 14 teams. Indianapolis won the event with 103.5 points, followed by Ashland (101.5), Findlay (89), Lake Erie (88.5), and Tiffin (82.5).
