Dragons open play at Toledo tourney

Tiffin University's men's tennis team opened their 2023-24 season at the Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational hosted by the University of Toledo.

Tiffin took on two teams on day one of the tourney, taking on Wayne State and Case Western Reserve.

The Dragons played eight singles matches against the Warriors, winning five of them.

Ruben Fonga started his season right where he left off last season, streaking to a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Matthew Telford battled through the first set en route to a 7-5, 6-1 win. Cyrille Colomb also pulled out a close 6-4, 7-6 victory, while Martin Driesner also cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win. The toughest win on the day went to Janis Auslands, who gutted out a 6-7, 6-4, 11-9 win.

Maxime Navrotchi also lost in a tough three-set battle 6-3, 5-7, 13-11.

Against Case Western, TU played six doubles matches and five singles contests. The doubles team of Fonga/Matthew Weaver won both of its matches by 6-1 scores. Daniel Martinez Roca/Matthew Sanders also fell in their matches 6-3 and 7-5. Colomb/Driesner fell 6-1 and 6-2.

In singles, TU got two wins. Telford posted a 6-4, 6-3 win while Navrotchi fought to a 7-6, 6-1 victory. Auslands lost a three-setter 6-4, 1-6, 10-4 while Ghali Ouajahat Filali lost 6-4, 7-5.
