Tiffin University's Ruben Fonga posted a win in his opening draw match at the ITA National Championships in Rome, Georgia.

Fonga took on Martins Abamu of Lubbock Christian University and posted a 6-3, 7-6 victory. He will face Santiago Perez of Columbus State on Oct. 14.

Fonga is the first TU men's tennis player to ever earn selection to the ITA National Championships. Fonga caught national attention by reaching the finals of the ITA Midwest Regional Championship hosted by the University of Indianapolis Sept. 17-19.

Last season Fonga was also regionally ranked 10th on the ITA singles rankings with a 19-5 record including a team-best 10 wins at first singles. He was also named a First Team All GMAC pick for the nationally-ranked Dragons, who also won the GMAC Championship.
