Dragons excel at Charger Invitational

Ruben Fonga was unbeaten, leading the Tiffin University men's tennis team in their season-opening action at the Charger Invitational.

Fonga posted a huge win over 25th-ranked (1st in region) Dom Spicer of Wayne State 6-3, 6-2 in semifinal action. He also had wins over Lawrence Tech 7-6, 6-3 and Wayne State 6-3, 6-4.

Maxime Navrotchi had a win over Lawrence Tech 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Hillsdale in a marathon match 6-1, 1-6, 10-6.

Michael Gurtner also had a win over Purdue Northwest 6-3, 6-4, while Matthew Telford also had a win over Purdue Northwest 6-3, 6-4.

In the B draw, Cyrille Colomb won three matches. He had wins over Wayne State 6-4, 6-2, Purdue Northwest 6-0, 6-0, and Hillsdale 6-3, 7-5.

Matthew Weaver also got a tough victory over Hillsdale 6-7, 7-5, 10-7.

In the C division, Matt Saunders got three wins. He beat Purdue Northwest 4-6, retired; Wayne State by default, and Findlay 6-3, 6-2.

Mattia Colli also beat Hillsdale 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles, the team of Telford/Gurtner posted an 8-2 win over Hillsdale and an 8-6 win over Lawrence Tech.

On the B side, Gabriel de Oliveira/Daniel Martinez Roca beat Hillsdale 8-2 and Lawrence Tech 8-3, while Cyrille Colomb/Maxime Navrotchi also won over Findlay 8-3 and Wayne State 8-5. Colomb/Navrotchi then beat de Oliveira/Martinez Roca 8-6 in the semifinals.

Benjamin Szarek/Timothy Richardson also beat Lawrence Tech by default.
