Dragons Take Hard-Fought Victory over Yeomen

OBERLIN, Ohio - Tiffin men's tennis earned a close 5-4 win on the road at Oberlin College on Saturday.

Doubles action was particularly exciting, as the Dragons were able to bounce back from an opening loss at No. 3 to take the other two pairings.

Nikita Parfenov and Michael Gurtner picked up the first victory at No. 1 with an 8-7 (7-4) win. At No. 2, Gabriel de Oliveira and Hugo Chatras also went to extra sets and a tiebreaker, pulling out an 8-7 (11-9) win. With the match played at a Division III school, every doubles match counts for a point, so the Dragons went into singles up 2-1.

Michael Gurtner extended the Tiffin lead with the first singles decision, taking the No. 2 spot with ease 6-0, 6-0. Oberlin took No. 1 singles to cut the lead back down to 3-2, but Tiffin bounced right back with a win at No. 4 as Hugo Chatras earned a back-and-forth 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10) win.

Needing just one more singles victory to clinch the match, Matthew Telford solidified the win with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3 to earn Tiffin's fifth point.

Oberlin was able to take No. 5 and No. 6 singles, but the Dragons hung on for the 5-4 win.

TU will play their third road match of the week tomorrow when they travel to Northwood with an 11:00 a.m. start.
