Men's Tennis Wins GMAC Tournament Championship

OWENSBORO, Ky. - With a 4-2 win over second-seeded Findlay on Saturday, Tiffin men's' tennis claimed the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship.

In their first year in the conference, the Dragons cruised through an undefeated regular season to enter the tournament as the top overall seed, defeating four-seed Walsh 4-2 in the semifinal before taking town Findlay for the title.

The win marks TU's first conference championship since joining Division II. The Dragons now await the final NCAA regional ranks to learn if they will be selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament.

The championship match was an exciting affair from start to finish, beginning with a tiebreaker to decide the doubles point.

Tom Arias and Gabriel de Oliveira quickly took care of their opponent at No. 2 by a 6-2 score, before Toby Cutting and Nikita Parfenov fell at the No. 1 position to even things up.

With the No. 3 doubles pairing knotted at 6-6, Hugo Chatras and Sorin Navrotchi were able to win 7-3 in the tiebreaker to claim a 7-6 victory and earn Tiffin the doubles point.

Singles action then got underway, and Findlay evened the score at one with a win at No. 1.

The Dragons would take the next two matches though, beginning with Parfenov coming from behind to take a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 2. In another tightly contested battle, Cutting also triumphed over his opponent with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) decision at No. 4 to put TU up 3-1.

With Tiffin needing just one more win out of the final three matches, the Oilers cut the lead to one with a win at No. 3.

That was as close as they would come, however, as Chatras took down his opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to give the Dragons the 4-2 win and the conference championship.
