Clutch free throws carry Dragons over Malone 82-76

Tiffin University (7-9, 5-5 G-MAC) led for nearly the entire game and hit clutch free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal an 82-76 win over visiting Malone.

Tiffin led for over 39 of the game's 40 minutes, shooting well, hitting their free throws, and not turning the ball over during that span. TU had just 7 turnovers in the game and held an 18-4 scoring advantage over turnovers while shooting 49 percent from the floor and 81 percent (17 of 21) from the charity stripe.

The Dragons, who overall held a 17-3 edge from the free throw line in the game, took control of the game early in the first half. With Malone leading 20-19, the Dragons went on a 22-12 run over the final 10:00 of the half to lead 41-32 at halftime.

TU then pushed their lead early in the second half to 49-36 but Malone responded with an 11-3 burst that cut the TU lead to five points.

The Dragons didn't back down, going on a 9-0 run that ran their lead back to 66-52 with 7:00 on the clock. Malone kept chipping away, but seven free throws by Trent Williams over the final 30 seconds sealed the victory for TU.

The foul shots were extra sweet for Williams, as they helped him eclipse 1000 career points in the closing seconds.

Five Dragons finished in double figures, with Joshua Rivers leading the way with 24 points and 5 assists. Wesley Jordan finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds, while Ian Lopez had 12 points, Carius Key had 10 points, and Williams had 10 points and 4 rebounds while going 7 for 8 from the line.
