Tiffin University and Ashland will meet each other on the football field in a big GLIAC matchup in week 8 of the 2017 football season.

THE SERIES: Tiffin trails the Eagles 6-1 in the overall series. However, TU turned heads with last year's 35-32 victory as they beat the Eagles for the first time. Charles Holland had a huge game, catching 11 passes for 262 yards and 2 scores, while Antonio Pipkin passed for 308 and rushed for 51 more. The Dragons defense held Ashland to just 106 yards rushing, as Jacob Mertus had 14 tackles. 
 
GLIAC SHOWDOWN:  Today's game has some big implications for possible postseason activity. Currently Grand Valley State and Ashland are tied for first place in the conference, while Ferris State and Tiffin are one game back. 
 
Ashland had a big 48-0 win in their Homecoming game vs. Michigan Tech last week. The Dragons won for the fifth time in their last six tries with their 35-24 win over Northern Michigan.

Ashland Offense
 
The Eagles are riding high, averaging 417 yards per game and 36.6 points per outing. Quarterback Travis Tarnowski has been as good as it gets, totaling 1,729 passing yards on 124 completions for 20 touchdowns. The Eagles' signal caller is the only man left standing in the ranks of the un-intercepted. Tarnowski has yet to throw a pick in 194 pass attempts. Tarnowski's 20 passing touchdowns rank among the best in the nation. On the ground Andrew Vaughn has carried the ball 114 times for 593 yards and six touchdowns. Ashland has two wide receivers that strike fear in the opposition. Kameron Green leads the Eagles in receptions with 29 receptions for 386 yards and five touchdowns. Matthew Wilcox has hauled in 27 receptions for a team high 568 yards and five touchdowns. As a team, the Eagles are averaging 262.3 passing yards per game and 154.7 rushing yards per game. Ashland has had success on 3rd downs this year, converting 49% of their attempts. In the red zone it is almost automatic points for the Eagles, scoring on 33 of 34 trips. Of the 33 scores, 26 have been touchdowns.
 
Ashland Defense
 
The Eagles are surrendering only 11 points per game this year, and last week pitched their second shutout of the year defeating Michigan Tech 48-0. The Eagles are allowing only 289 yards of total offense with 123.3 coming on the ground and 165.7 coming through the air. Ashland has allowed only six passing touchdowns so far and have intercepted eight passes. The opposition's ground game hasn't fared much better, finding the end zone only two times. Clay Shreve leads the team in tackles with 44. Austin Utter leads the team in sacks with 4.5. Defensive end James Prater Jr. is a monster in the trenches with 23 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and a team leading 8.5 tackles for loss. The Eagles' defense had a hay day last week against Michigan Tech, intercepting four passes, allowing 54 yards passing and 112 yards rushing.
 
Ashland Special Teams
 
Aidan Simenc leads the Eagles in points, hitting 9 of 11 field goal attempts and 31 of 33 extra point attempts. The punting situation at Ashland is unique, as the quarterback Travis Tarnowski and backup quarterback John Davies handle the duties. Tarnowski has punted 18 times for a 35.3 yard average. He's downed eight inside the 20-yard line and has a long of 52 yards. Davies is averaging 44.9 yards per punt and has placed two punts inside the 20-yard line.

Tiffin Offense
 
The Dragons put 35 points on the board last weekend in a win over Northern Michigan. Tiffin compiled 394 yards of total offense on 71 plays. The Dragons showed great balance, rushing for 198 yards and passing for 196 yards. Nick Watson led Tiffin in both rushing and passing, collecting 78 yards on the ground and 196 in the air. Watson passed for two scores and ran for another, and didn't turn the football over. JaQuan Hardy carried the ball 35 times for 67 yards and a touchdown. Victor Talley led Tiffin in receiving yards with 52. Tony Shead accounted for both of Watson's passing touchdowns, hauling in five catches for 44 yards. The Dragons had some trouble on 3rd down, converting only 5 of 15 opportunities. Thus far, Nick Watson has passed for 1,435 yards on 118 completions for nine touchdowns. Watson has carried the ball 76 times for 255 yards and five touchdowns. JaQuan Hardy leads Tiffin in rushing, toting the rock 128 times for 696 yards and five scores. Tony Shead has snagged a team high 24 receptions for 307 yards and three touchdowns.
 
 
Tiffin Defense
 
The Dragons allowed 24 points against Northern Michigan, the second most allowed all season. The Wildcats accumulated 431 yards of total offense on 66 plays. Northern Michigan had great success on the ground, stacking up 241 yards on the ground. Tiffin held the Wildcats to only 13 completions, and allowed only three 3rd down conversions. Brandon Burks had another great game for Tiffin, piling up 11 tackles. Burks leads the Dragons in tackles this season, pulling in 61 stops. Brandon is tied for the lead in sacks and is at the top in tackles for loss with 10.5. Carrington Contee is second on the team in tackles, and leads the pack in solo stops with 36. The Dragons' defensive line has been as good as advertised. The defensive front has accumulated 14.5 of the Dragons' 20 sacks and 29.5 of Tiffin's 62 tackles for loss. Victor Cave and Brandon Burks are tied for the lead in sacks in the GLIAC. Burks is also near the top in tackles per game at 8.7, 3rd in the GLIAC. Sacks and turnovers forced are key for the Dragons. In victories this season, the Dragons have forced nine turnovers and totaled 18 sacks. In the Dragons' two losses Tiffin forced only two turnovers and totaled only two sacks.
 
Tiffin Special Teams
 
Kicker Joe Metcalf did not attempt a field goal in Tiffin's win last Saturday. Thus far, Metcalf has hit 9 of 13 field goals and 23 of 25 extra point attempts this year. Harry McCollum punted eight times against Northern Michigan, averaging 41.9 yards per attempt. McCollum has punted 42 times this year for 38.6 yards per attempt. He has been a valuable ally for the Tiffin defense, downing 15 punts inside the 20-yard line.
