Offensive Explosion Gives Dragons Two Wins Against Trevecca Nazarene

The Tiffin University baseball team grabbed two wins against Trevecca Nazarene, winning 21-8 and 19-4 on a huge offensive day.

Overall the offense scored 40 total runs, hit 11 home runs, and went 40-for-81 (.493) at the plate with 17 RBI in today's games.

The Dragons improve to 21-14 overall and 16-4 in the conference, while the Trojans fall to 30-9 overall and 15-7 in the conference.

Game One:
Tiffin had an offensive explosion with 20 mile-an-hour winds blowing as they scored 21 runs, the most runs the Dragons have scored this season.

After a scoreless first inning, the Dragons got on the board as Nich Green hit an RBI single with runners on first and second to take a 1-0 lead. Isaiah Mirabal hit a three-run homer to give the Dragons a 4-0 lead after two innings.

Tiffin kept up the pressure in the third inning. With runners on the corners Zach Campbell hit a double to right-center field to score Cal Brazier from third. The next batter was walked to load up the bases, then Griffin Stevens hit an RBI single to third to score TJ Truso to lead 6-0 in the bottom of the third inning.

In the fourth inning, Nich Green was up to the plate with runners on first and second and hit a huge home run to left-center to take a commanding 9-0 lead to force a pitching change. The new pitcher walked the first batter he faced, Mirabal flew out to center field, then Zach Campbell doubled through the left side to bring in Truso to lead 10-0 at the end of the fourth inning.

The fifth saw Griffin Stevens hitting a lead-off homer to increase the lead to 11-0. Three batters later Cal Brazier hit an RBI single through the left side to score Tim Orr from third. With the bases loaded TJ Truso singled to center field, scoring Engle. Mirabal hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Brazier, and Campbell hit an infield fly that was missed to score Green from third and give Tiffin a 15-0 lead. 

The Trojans got on the board in the sixth as they scored two runs to bring the score to 15-2 and scored one run in the eighth off a home run to cut the Tiffin lead to 15-3.

The Dragons also got on the board in the eighth inning as the first two batters got on base to put runners on the corners for Stevens, who rewarded their effort with a three-run homer to increase their lead to 18-3.

Three batters later Cal Brazier hit a three-run home run with Evan Engle and Tim Orr on first and second to lead 21-3 going into the final inning.

The Trojans had a late surge, scoring five runs on six hits to cut into the Dragons' lead but the defense stifled that run and Tiffin took game number one 21-8.

Tyler Wehrle grabbed his fifth win of the season, improving to 5-0 this year. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowed two runs on six hits, and struck out 11. Hayden Maples came in in relief and pitched 2.2 innings, allowed six runs on eight hits, and struck out two.

Nich Green led the offense as he went 3-for-4 with one double and one home run, scored three runs, and had four RBI, Griffin Stevens went 4-for-6 with one home run, scored two runs, and had a team-high five RBI,

Cal Brazier went 3-for-5 with a home run, scored four runs, and recorded four RBI, and Isaiah Mirabal went 1-for-5 with a home run, scored one run, and had four RBI.

Overall the Dragons went 24-for-48, scored 21 runs, registered 20 RBI, and tallied five home runs in game one.

Game Two:
More of the same in game two, as the Dragons got on the board in the bottom of the seventh off a lead-off home run from Zach Campbell.

Trevecca countered with a home run of their own in the second to tie the game at 1-1.

Jake Shier was walked to start the bottom of the second and Cal Brazier hit a home run to right field to take a 3-1 lead. Then, Nich Green singled to center field and Evan Engle hit a homer to right-center field to give the Dragons a 5-1 lead.

In the third inning, Trevecca scored three runs to come within one of Tiffin at 5-4, but the Dragons responded by scoring one run in the fourth off a lead-off home run from Brazier to go up 6-4.

Tiffin had an offensive outburst in the bottom of the fifth as Marino Pugnetti was walked to start the inning then Griffin Stevens singled, putting runners on first and second for Tim Orr. Orr hit a home run to right field, increasing the Dragons' lead to 9-4 and forcing a pitching change from the Trojans. Jake Shier was walked then stole second and Cal Brazier hit a double to deep right-center field to score Shier. With runners on first and second Truso doubled to score Brazier from second, then Nich Green scored on a wild pitch to increase the Dragons' lead to 12-4. Evan Engle followed that with a single to right field that scored Truso. Three batters later with the bases loaded Griffin Stevens grounded into a double play but Engle was able to score a run to give the Dragons a 14-4 lead going into the sixth inning.

Tiffin scored five more runs in the sixth inning as three of the first four batters got on base to load the bases up for Engle who singled through the left side to score, then Zach Campbell hit a grand slam to put the game out of reach for the visitors as Tiffin went on to win 19-4.

Gunnar Boehm registered the win as he pitched 6.0 innings, allowed four runs on six hits, and struck out five, and Kyler Archual finished off the last inning as he allowed zero hits to seal the win.
