Orr and Stevens Shine as Dragons Split Doubleheader with Eagles

The Tiffin University baseball team split the doubleheader on day two with Ashland, dropping game one 13-7 and winning game two 16-6.

The Dragons now hold a 14-13 record overall and a 9-3 record in the GMAC, while Ashland has an 11-9 overall record and 4-4 in the GMAC.

Game One:

The Dragons took a 1-0 lead early in the first as Marino Pugnetti and Griffin Stevens singled to put runners on the corners. Tim Orr hit a grounder to second base that scored Pugnetti from third.

The Eagles tied the game 1-1 with an RBI double in the bottom of the second.

TJ Truso started the third inning with a lead-off walk, advanced to second as Zach Campbell grounded out, then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball to lead 2-1. Pugnetti followed that with a double to left field, Stevens singled putting runners on the corners again for Orr who flew out to center field, scoring Pugnetti to increase Tiffin's lead to 3-1. Ashland cut the lead to 3-2 on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.  

Tiffin responded in the top of the fifth by scoring four runs to take a 7-2 lead. Stevens hit a 3-run home run with Pugnetti and Campbell on base. Cal Brazier singled to center field to score Orr from second.

Ashland's bats caught fire as they scored 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 13-7 lead and went on to win game one of the doubleheader.

Gunnar Boehm started the game and went 4.0 innings, allowed two runs on five hits, and struck out three. Kyler Archual took the loss as he came in the fifth inning but allowed six runs on five hits.

Griffin Stevens led the offense as he went 3-for-4 with a home run, registered three RBI, and scored once, Tim Orr went 1-for-2, scored once, and had two RBI, and Cal Brazier went 1-for-4 and had one RBI.

Game Two:

Tiffin started strong, loading up the bases after five batters. Thomas Auth came to the plate and hit a 2 RBI single to right field to score Ricky Havrilla from third and Zach Campbell from second. After Isaiah Mirabal was walked to load up the bases Kole Klasic hit a double to center field to score Auth and Havrilla to lead 4-0.

Marino Pugnetti doubled to center field and advanced to third after Griffin Stevens singled to right field. Tim Orr hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Pugnetti to increase the Dragons' lead to 5-0 after two innings.

After two scoreless innings, the Dragons added two more runs as Griffin Stevens started the inning with a lead-off single followed by a home run from Tim Orr to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Ashland responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth, starting off the inning with four straight singles to cut the Dragons' lead to 7-4.

Klasic added one more run by hitting a homer to right field to lead 8-4. Tiffin went on to score three more in the seventh inning starting with a Stevens single, then Orr hit a triple to right field to score Stevens. Orr then scored on a wild pitch to lead 10-4. With runners on first and third TJ Truso singled through the right side scoring Auth to increase the Dragons' advantage to 11-4. Ashland scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to come within five of Tiffin at 11-6.

With the sunset getting closer the Dragons increased their lead even more, scoring five runs in the top of the eighth. Pugnetti started the inning with a double, followed by a Stevens' single that scored Pugnetti. Orr and Havrilla had back-to-back walks to load the bases for Auth as he hit a 2 RBI double to right field. A sacrifice fly from Mirabal scored Havrilla, followed by Auth scoring on a wild pitch during the next at-bat to give the Dragons a 16-6 lead.

Francisco Olivarez was registered with the win as he pitched 5.1 innings, allowed four runs on nine hits, and tallied nine strikeouts.

Griffin Stevens went 4-for-5, scored three times, and had one RBI, Tim Orr went 2-for-2 with a triple and a home run, scored four times, and tallied four RBI. Thomas Auth went 2-for-3, scored three times, and had four RBI, and teammate Kole Klasic went 2-for-5 at the plate, hitting one home run, scored one run, and registered three RBI.
