Dragons Sweep Lake Erie in Four-Game Series

The Tiffin University baseball team swept conference opponent Lake Erie with two wins on Sunday, winning game three 15-0 and game four the Dragons pitching kept a no-hitter and went on to win 7-1.

The Dragons improve to 12-11 overall and 7-1 in the conference, while the Storm fell to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Game One:

The Dragons had a great game as everyone seemed to be firing on all cylinders. The Dragons started strong, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first, starting with a double from leadoff hitter Zach Campbell. Marino Pugnetti then was hit by pitch, and Griffin Stevens reached on an error to load the bases. Tim Orr hit a grand slam to take a 4-0 lead. Three batters later senior Nich Green hit a single home run to take a 5-0 lead.

Tiffin scored two more in the bottom of the second as Griffin Stevens hit a single to center field to score the runners on second and third to take a 7-0 after two innings. Green started the third inning with a lead-off homer to give Tiffin an 8-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Dragons scored three more runs as Thomas Auth doubled through the left side to score Orr from second and Stevens from third. Two batters later Green hit a sacrifice fly to center field with runners on the corners to put Tiffin up 11-0.

In the fifth, Tiffin scored four more runs starting with a Griffin Stevens home run, then Tim Orr hit his second homer of the game. After Cal Brazier doubled through the left side TJ Truso hit a double to left-center to bring in Brazier to force a pitching change for the Storm. Kole Klasic hit a single to bring in Truso to give the Dragons a 15-0 lead after five.

Tiffin's offense was led by Tim Orr as he went 3-for-4, hitting two home runs, scoring three runs, and registering five RBI, Griffin Stevens went 2-for-3 with one home run, scored three runs, and tallied three RBI, and Nich Green went 2-for-3, hit two home runs, scored two runs, and had three RBI. Thomas Auth went 2-for-4, scored one run, and had two RBI, Kole Klasic went 2-for-3, scored one run, and one RBI, and TJ Truso went 2-for-4, scored one run, and one RBI.

Michael Boswell recorded his third win of the season as he pitched 5.0 innings, allowed only two hits, and tallied eight strikeouts.

Game Two:

Tiffin kept their momentum going from the first game as they scored two in the first inning as Campbell led off with a single and stole second. Griffin Stevens hit a triple deep into center field to score Campbell. Tim Orr grounded out to shortstop but was able to score Stevens from third to lead 2-0.

The Dragons added one in the second. With runners at first and second Marino Pugnetti singled to score Klasic from third to lead 3-0.

After three scoreless innings from both teams, the Storm got on the board in the top of the sixth. After a walk, a stolen base, and a sacrifice bunt placed a runner on third, an error on a grounder to second base scored an unearned run to cut the lead down to 3-1. Tiffin responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth starting with a Campbell walk. Pugnetti then singled,  putting runners on the corners. Griffin Stevens hit an RBI single scoring Campbell to force a pitching change. Tim Orr was the first to face the new pitcher and hit a single to right-center field to score Pugnetti from third to increase their lead to 5-1.

Tiffin scored two more in the eighth. With runners on first and second, Tim Orr hit a 2 RBI double to right-center to score Campbell and Pugnetti to seal the 7-1 win over the Storm.

Tim Orr led the offense in game two as well, going 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI, and Griffin Stevens went 2-for-4 including a triple, scored one run, and two RBI. Marino Pugnetti went 2-for-3, scored two runs, and registered one RBI, and teammate Zach Campbell went 2-for-3 and scored a team-high three runs.

Tyler Wehrle recorded his second win of the season as he pitched 7.0 innings, allowing zero hits, one unearned run, walked one, and had 10 strikeouts. Wehrle along with Scott Adelman, and Logan Swonger combined to pitch a no-hitter through 26 at-bats.
