Baseball Begin Season with two wins over Northwood

The Tiffin University baseball team went 2-0 against Northwood, winning game one 4-3, then going on to win game two 10-5.

Game One:

After a scoreless first two innings, the Timberwolves found their bats and scored one run in the third and fourth inning to lead 2-0.

The Dragons responded in the fifth, scoring two runs off a Griffin Stevens single to center field that saw Kole Klasic and Marino Pugnetti score to tie the game at 2-2.

Again Northwood scored in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. However the Dragons scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning as Nich Green walked to score Jake Shier to tie the ball game, then a wild pitch gave Tiffin a 4-3 lead as Zach Campbell scored.

Stevens led the team going 3-for-4 with two RBI and teammate Jake Shier went 1-for-2 at the plate and scored one run. Logan Fisher registered the win, pitching one inning and allowing two hits, one earned run, and two strikeouts.

Game Two:

In game two Tiffin scored the first run of the game in the third as Stevens reached first on an error allowing Shier to score, then the Timberwolves tied the game in the bottom of the fifth off a double to right field.

The Dragons responded in the sixth as Cal Brazier doubled to left field allowing Tim Orr to score. Two batters later Tommy Thamann doubled to left field to score Brazier, giving Tiffin a 3-1 lead.

Northwood scored the next two runs, one in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game at 3-3.

In the top of the eighth inning the Tiffin bats caught fire after Thamann hit a grand slam to give the Dragons a 7-3 lead, scoring Brazier, Thomas Auth and Tim Orr. Then, after three more walked batters the Timberwolves were forced into a pitching change, and with the bases loaded Tim Orr singled to left field to score Shier from third to extend their lead to 9-3.

In the top of the ninth inning Tiffin scored once more on an error by the third baseman to score Brazier, giving the Dragons a 10-3 lead.

The Timberwolves scored two in the bottom of the ninth to cut the lead to 10-5 but the Dragons held on for the win.

Tommy Thamann was the star of the game, going 2-for-4 with five RBI, scoring one run, and walking once, and Cal Brazier went 1-for-3 with three runs scored, two walks, and one RBI.  Gunnar Boehm registered the win, pitching 1.2 innings. He allowed three hits, one earned run, and had two strikeouts.
