Ashland Bats Overcome Dragons

ASHLAND, Ohio - Tiffin baseball clawed back from an early 5-0 hole to cut the Ashland University lead to one in the top of the eighth, but the Eagles pulled away with five runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 10-4 win on Wednesday afternoon.

The Dragons fell into the deficit after three innings of play as Ashland was able to capitalize on three walks and two Tiffin errors to score five runs (just two earned).

After relieving starter Jake Monnin with two outs in the bottom of the second, Aaron George pitched well, only allowing one earned run across 3.1 innings while striking out a pair of Eagles. Michael Ross also impressed following George, as the sophomore threw two scoreless innings with three punchouts.

However, Ashland's starter was just as impressive, going six innings and striking out seven Dragons while allowing three hits and no runs to score. The Eagles went to the bullpen to start the seventh, though, and Tiffin jumped on the opportunity.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Kole Klasic managed to leg out an infield hit and then come around to score on an Aaron Gonzalez double to the gap in left center. Cody Orr led off the eighth with a single, and was brought home one out later as Kyle Vance ripped an RBI double down the left field line. The Dragons tacked on two more in the frame, as John Heckman followed with a blast over the fence in left to bring the deficit to just one, 5-4.

The Eagles rallied back for five runs in the bottom of the eighth, though, and set Tiffin down in order in the ninth to claim the victory.

The Dragons will now begin conference play this weekend as they travel to Columbus to face Ohio Dominican for four games across Saturday and Sunday.
