Dragons control ground game, win 40-13 over Walsh

Tiffin University (9-0, 7-0 G-MAC) controlled the ground game from the outset, quickly outpacing Walsh 40-13 on Senior Day.

The Dragons scored 28 of their points in the first half. Overall TU totaled 468 yards of offense with 308 of those coming on the ground. They also racked up 26 first downs including 15 rushing.

On TU's second possession, Devin Nelson blasted through the middle for a 39-yard touchdown run at the 7:44 mark to make it 7-0.

Tiffin then took its next possession and continued to run with a variety of backs. After a 28-yard Keegan Ray to Josh Lewis completion, Ronald Blackman posted two runs for 18 yards and finished the drive off with an 11-yard TD reception that made it 14-0.

After a Walsh 20-yard field goal early in the second quarter, TU bounced back for another score. Tyrese Banks-Dorn took a direct snap and rumbled 14 yards for a touchdown that made it 21-3 at the 10:31 mark.

TU got its final score of the half with just 12 seconds remaining. Banks-Dorn rushed 6 yards for his second score to cap a 5-play, 57-yard drive that made it 28-3 at the half.

Walsh quarterback Dalys Jett found a hole and rushed 62 yards for the Cavaliers' lone touchdown on the day to make it TU 28, Walsh 10 at the 13:25 mark of the third quarter but again the Dragons responded immediately. 

Three rushes by Nelson for 33 yards led to a 7-yard TD toss from Ray to Josh Lewis at the 11:03 mark to push the score to 34-10.

The ground game continued to keep the clock running, with Tiffin getting its final score early in the fourth quarter when Blackman rushed 23 yards to cap a 75-yard drive at the 12:04 mark.

Overall TU had 26 first downs to Walsh's 15, 308 rushing yards to Walsh's 182, and 468 total yards to the Cavaliers' 307.

Tiffin was also efficient in the red zone, scoring on 4 of 5 opportunities. They also registered 3 sacks with an interception defensively.

Nelson led all rushers with 111 yards on 13 carries (8.5 ypc) while Banks-Dorn had 80 yards on 6 rushes (13.3 per carry). Blackman also had a strong average, gaining 58 yards on 6 carries for a 9.7 clip.

Ray was efficient behind center, connecting on 14 of 19 passes for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns. Lewis was the primary recipient with 58 yards on 5 catches while Javier Wills also had 32 yards on 3 receptions.

Lewis had a strong all-purpose day, adding 92 yards in kick returns to total 150 all-purpose yards.

Defensively Zeke Brown had 8 tackles while Ramond Jackson had 5 stops with a sack and 2 tackles for loss. Patrick Tueimeh also had 5 tackles. Kris Artis had a sack while Radical Rothermel and Antonio O'Berry had half sacks each. Malik Baker also had an interception.
