Dragons Win Two of Three in Tripleheader

The Tiffin University baseball team won two games of the three games played today, winning 8-3 and 12-2 before falling 6-5.

The Dragons improve to 16-7 overall and 11-5 in the conference, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 10-14 overall and 7-9 in the conference.

Game One:

Cedarville got on the board first in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. However, Tiffin scored two of their own in the second as Tim Orr homered to left center to tie the game, then Marino Pugnetti hit an RBI double to left field to score Thoms Auth from third to lead 2-1.

The Dragons scored two more runs in the fourth inning. Tommy Thamann grounded to second with runners on second and third to score Kyle Vance from third, then Griffin Stevens doubled down the right field line to score Jake Shier from third to lead 4-1. 

Tiffin scored four runs in the sixth to lead 8-1. Stevens came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a double to left center to score Thamann and Shier. A passed ball allowed Danny Donnelly to score, then Auth singled through the right side to score Stevens. 

The Yellow Jackets hit a 2-run homer in the final inning but it was not enough as the Dragons won 8-3. 

Griffin Stevens did well as he went 3-for-4, scored one run, and had three RBI. Teammate Kyle Vance went 2-for-4 scoring one run, and had one RBI.

Tyler Wehrle pitched 5.0 innings, allowed three hits, one earned run and had eight strikeouts. 

Game Two:

In game two of the tripleheader the Yellow Jackets struck first again in the third inning as Rotello singled and advanced to second on a throwing error to score the runners on second and third. 

Then, after no runs scored through the first four innings, the Dragons scored nine runs in the fifth. It started with a Nich Green double to left center to score Pugnetti and Vance. Next, Donnelly singled with the bases loaded to score Zach Campbell and Shier. Tim Orr reached first on a fielder's choice that scored Thamann from third. With runners on first and third Donnelly scored on a wild pitch, then Pugnetti doubled to left center to score Orr. With the bases loaded Campbell doubled to left center to score Vance and Pugnetti to lead 9-2.

The Dragons added three more runs in the sixth. Vance singled through the left side to score Donnelly, and two batters later Campbell singled up the middle to score Orr and Vance to seal the 12-2 win for the Dragons. 

Zach Campbell went 2-for-3, tallied one run, and four RBI and teammate Danny Donnelly went 2-for-4, scored two runs, and had two RBI. 

Gunnar Boehm got the win as he pitched 6.0 innings, allowed five hits, two unearned runs, and nine strikeouts. 

Game three:

Cedarville jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring one in the first inning and three in the second. 

The Dragons answered in the bottom of the second, scoring one run with the bases loaded and Thamann hit a ground ball to second base to score Orr. 

The Dragons tied the game at 4-4 in the third as Vance hit a two RBI single to left field to score Donnelly and Stevens. Then, Orr scored on a passed ball. 

The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. However, the Dragons responded with one run in the bottom of the fourth off a double by Donnelly to score Shier to come within one of the visitors but the host ran out of daylight to fall 6-5.  

Donnelly went 1-for-2, scored one run, and one RBI and Vance went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
