Tiffin completes sweep of Pioneers

The Tiffin University baseball team won both games against conference opponent Malone University 12-1 and 10-7.

The Dragons improve to 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the conference while the Pioneers fall to 9-14 overall and 4-12 in the conference.

Game 1:

Malone took an early lead in the top of the first as the catcher singled to center field to bring in Gingerich from second.

The visitors kept that lead until the bottom of the third when the Dragons scored six runs. Jake Shier singled off a well-placed bunt then stole second. Nich Green hit a ground ball to second that was fumbled which allowed Shier to score from third and Danny Donnelly to score from second. With runners on the corners Ricky Havrilla singled through the left side, advancing Green to third and scoring Griffin Stevens. Kyle Vance doubled to bring in Marino Pugnetti and Green. Shier got on base from an error by the third baseman to score Tommy Thamann from third to lead 6-1.

Tiffin added four more runs in the fifth. Starting with runners on the corners Vance hit a single up the middle to score Pugnetti on third to force a change in pitchers. Jake Shier was the first to face the new pitcher and he hit a single to left field and got to second on an error scoring Thamann from third. Danny Donnelly then singled to right center to score Shier and Vance to give the host a 10-1 lead.

In the sixth inning with two outs and runners on first and second Shier doubled to left center to score Thamann from third to force a pitching change. The new pitcher would throw a wild pitch to score Vance from third to lead 12-1.

Tyler Wehrle got the win on the mound, improving to 3-1 on the year. He pitched 5.0 innings, allowed no earned runs with four hits and tallied seven strikeouts.

Kyle Vance and Jake Shier led the offense with both going 3-for-4 with one double, three RBI, and scored two runs.

Game 2:

Both teams got on the board in the first inning with Malone taking a 2-0 lead off a sacrifice fly to center with the bases loaded and a double down the left field line.

Donnelly started off the inning with a triple down the right field line, then Thamann hit a sac fly to score Donnelly. Then, with a runner on first, Tim Orr hit a home run to right center field to take a 3-2 lead.

The Dragons added one more in the second as Shier was hit by pitch to get on base then Donnelly doubled to left field to score Shier to lead 4-2.

Malone scored two in the fifth to tie the game at 4 all. With the game tied through the sixth inning Tiffin's offense scored five runs in the seventh to lead 9-4. Starting the seventh the Dragons got walked twice to start, then Tim Orr hit his second home run of the day to score Stevens and Thamann. Then, with runners on second and third, Vance doubled down the left field line to score both runners and lead 9-4.

The Pioneers answered in the top of the eighth with three runs of their own to come within two of the Dragons. But a score in the bottom of the eighth sealed the 10-7 win for the Dragons.

The Dragons' offense was led by Tim Orr who went 2-for-3 including two home runs for five RBI. Then, Danny Donnelly went 3-for-4 and a home run away from hitting the cycle as he had a triple, double, and a single, scored one run, and had one RBI.

Logan Fisher got the win, improving to 2-0 on the season by pitching 2.0 innings in relief for Gunnar Boehm. He allowed three hits, three runs, and struck out four. Boehm did well starting on the mound, as he pitched 6.0 innings, allowed six hits, four runs, and struck out four.
