Huge Upset as Dragons Beat #1 Seed Ashland 3-1

The #8 Seed Tiffin University volleyball team (15-16, 8-9 GMAC) defeated the #1 Seed Ashland 3-1 on day one of the G-MAC Tournament.

The Dragons won 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, and 25-20.

The Eagles as the host jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, but Tiffin went on a 4-3 run to cut the lead to 8-6. Tiffin rallied, outscoring Ashland 6-3 to tie the set at 13-13. The two teams kept it tight, neither leading by more than a point. With the teams tied at 23-23, the Eagles scored two back-to-back points to win the first set 25-23.

Ashland led 4-1 early in the second set. However, the Dragons responded with a monster 12-3 run to take a 13-7 lead. The Eagles responded with a 3-0 run to cut Tiffin's lead to 13-10. Ashland went on a 7-4 run to tie the game at 17-17, but TU came back with a 3-0 run to lead 20-17. The host managed to go on a 6-3 run to tie the game at 23-23, but the Dragons scored two straight points to win the second set 25-23.

TU kept their momentum from the second set and built a 6-1 lead to start set three. Ashland responded with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 8-7. The Eagles kept it close until the Dragons went on an 8-0 run to lead 20-11. AU responded with a 10-3 burst to cut the lead down to 23-21 but Tiffin went on to win the third set 25-21.

The Dragons started the fourth set strong going up 3-1. Ashland responded with a 5-3 run to tie the game at 6-6. TU responded with a 6-2 run to lead 12-8. Tiffin kept the Eagles at a distance but Ashland chipped away at the lead and came within three at 22-19. Tiffin went on to win the fourth set 25-20.

Wakaya Wilson led the Dragons' offense with 20 kills, a .486 hitting percentage, six digs, two assists, and two block assists, Kenedi Goon tallied 16 kills with a .359 hitting percentage, seven digs, and two block assists, and Taylor Peterson recorded 11 kills with a .211 hitting percentage, four digs, and one block assist.

Clare Kwiatkowski led the team with 50 assists, had 10 digs, two service aces, two block assists, and one kill, and teammate Diana Heitkamp led the team on defense with 25 digs, five aces, and five assists.

Tiffin will take on #5 Trevecca Nazarene after the Trojans upset #4 Cedarville 3-0. That G-MAC semifinal match is set for a 7:30 p.m. match Nov. 11.
