Mason reaches semifinals at NCAA Championships

Nicholas Mason remained in the hunt for another national title at 197 pounds, reaching the semifinal round at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Mason, the current national falls leader, posted two victories by fall to reach the semis. He opened with a win by fall over Austin Watkins (Queens) in 6:14, and then looked even more impressive against Brian Kennerly (Kutztown) with a fall in 2:28.

Four other TU grapplers saw their championship runs come up short.

At 125 pounds, Nicholas Daggett (UNC-Pembroke) won by fall over Branden Mendoza in 1:17. Mendoza then bounced back to post a slim win by decision over Christian Mejia (McKendree) 3-1. In Consolation round 2, Cody Fatzinger (Western Colorado) won by decision 4-3.

At 133 pounds, Garrett Vos (St. Cloud State) clipped TU's Bryce Allison 14-9. Allison then also posted a tough win by decision over Vincent Scollo (Davis & Elkins) 4-3, but then fell to Devin Flannery (Millersville) 7-0.

At 141 pounds, Grayston DiBlasi (Colorado Mines) posted a win by fall over Matthew Zuckerman in 4:56. Zuckerman then posted his own hard-fought win in sudden victory over Caleb Morris (Pitt-Johnstown) 5-1 before Brody Norman (McKendree) ended his run with a razor-thin decision 3-2.

Lastly, at 285 pounds, Lee Herrington (Nebraska-Kearney) opened with a win by decision over David Henson 3-0. Henson then fell by fall to Weston Hunt (Colorado Mines) in 2:07.
