Dragons pick up two wins at NWCA Duals

Tiffin University picked up two dual victories over ranked opponents on the first day of the NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Kentucky.

Tiffin, ranked 7th in the latest national rankings, toppled 10th ranked Newberry 24-14 to open their day, then fell to the top-ranked team in the nation St. Cloud State 39-3. The Dragons then bounced back to beat 13th ranked Limestone 24-19 in their final match of the day.

Tiffin fell in its first three matches against Newberry before rallying to win six of the final seven matches for the victory.

Christopher Donathan (149) got the Dragons rolling with a 12-4 major decision followed by another 12-3 major decision by Trey Grine (157). Bryan LaVearn (165) followed with a 19-2 tech fall win, while Zachary Bierfeldt (174) flattened his opponent in 1:22. After Hayden Bronne (184) lost a close 7-3 decision wrestling up in weight, Nicholas Mason (197) battled to an 11-8 win before David Henson (285) won the final match with a 5-0 shutout.

St. Cloud State showed why it is the top ranked team in the land, winning their 56th straight dual with the win over the Dragons. Grine, however, kept his winning streak going, picking up the lone win for TU with a 3-1 win in sudden victory. TU also had two other narrow losses, as Donathan fell 3-2 and Bronne lost 6-2 back at 174 pounds.

In their final match, TU once again dropped its first three weight classes before rebounding to win five of the final seven matches.

Donathan picked up a pin in a brisk 19 seconds, while Grine also won in a 7-0 shutout. After LaVearn lost a narrow 4-0 score, Bronne got a pin in 1:02 and Richard Screptock (184) got another fall in 4:30. TU got another win from Henson in the 285 pound match 7-2.
