Women’s Basketball Fall in Overtime Thriller to Walsh

The Tiffin University women's basketball team fell in overtime to Walsh University 55-54.

The Cavaliers improve to 17-3 overall and 12-2 in the conference, while the Dragons fall to 9-9 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

Both teams struggled from the floor, with Tiffin shooting 19-for-58 (32.8%). TU hit well from beyond the arc, though, going 6-for-11 (54.5%). Walsh shot 18-for-52 from the floor (34.6%) and 6-for-17 from three-point territory (35.3%). Walsh had the advantage in rebounds, grabbing 44 compared to Tiffin's 36, more assists 11-6, and more points in the paint 20 to the Dragons' 16. Tiffin defensively forced 17 turnovers and scored 16 points off the turnovers, while the Cavaliers caused 14 turnovers and scored 10.

The Dragons started on an 11-2 run in the first five minutes of play, with Aarion Richards, Dana Rose and Kirsten Williams each scoring three points. The teams traded points the rest of the quarter with the Cavaliers outscoring Tiffin 6-4, but the Dragons ended the first quarter up 15-8.

The Cavaliers started the second quarter hot with a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to 15-14 with 8:34 left in the quarter and went on to take a 20-19 lead, outscoring the Dragons 6-5. However, the Dragons rallied with a 5-0 run to lead 24-20 going into the half.

The Dragons came out of the half on fire, going on a 10-5 run to lead 34-25 with 4:56 left in the third frame. Tiffin outscored Walsh 19-14 in the third to hold a 43-34 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Walsh came out and went on a 12-2 run to take a 46-45 lead over the Dragons with 2:49 left in the game. Tiffin countered with a 4-0 run to tie the game at 50-50 with three seconds left in the game off an Aarion Nichols layup to send the game into overtime.

The Cavaliers scored the first points in overtime and made a three to lead 53-50. Nichols scored the next bucket off a layup at the 2:43 mark to cut the host lead to one point. After, Walsh made two clutch free throws to lead 55-52 with plenty of time left and Nichols again came through for the Dragons to score another layup to cut the lead to 55-54 with 2:13 left in overtime. Neither team was able to score in the final two minutes over overtime and the Cavaliers walked away with a narrow 55-54 win.

The Dragons' offense was led by Aarion Nichols who scored 18 points shooting 6-for-20 from the field, and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, six rebounds, one steal, and one block, Dana Rose tallied 10 points shooting 4-for-7 from the field, and 2-for-2 from three-point range, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal, and Jada Tate tallied nine points shooting 4-for-13 from the field, had 11 rebounds, and two steals.
