Strong Defense Pushes Dragons Past Bearcats

The Tiffin University women's basketball team had a strong debut to the 2021-22 season as with a 64-40 win over GLVC opponent McKendree with four starters recording double-digit points. 

The Dragons improve to 1-0 on the year, while the Bearcats fall to 0-1.

In the first quarter, McKendree kept up with Tiffin, tying the game at 12-12 with two minutes to go, but the Dragons were able to outscore the Beatcats and hold a 16-12 lead after one. 

After a Savanah Richards layup to start the second quarter, the Bearcats made a three point play, making the bonus free throw to come within four of Tiffin at 18-14.  Over the next five minutes McKendree went on an 11-4 run to take a 25-22 lead over the Dragons. However, Tiffin responded with a 9-0 run to lead 31-25 at halftime. 

Tiffin went on a 13-0 run out of the locker room to lead 44-25. The Bearcats made their first basket of the second half with 4:59 left in the third quarter. The Dragons outscored the host 18-7 in the second quarter to lead 49-32 going into the final frame. 

It was more of the same from the Dragons in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Bearcats 15-8 to win 64-40 in the first game of the 2021-22 season.

Savanah Richards led the team with 13 points shooting 5-for-10 from the field, nabbed five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, Kirsten Williams registered 12 points shooting 4-for-7, six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Aarion Nichols tallied 11 points, shooting 5-for-15, grabbed seven rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block and teammate Jada Tate scored 10 points shooting 4-for-9, had seven rebounds, and three steals.  

TU held a 43-28 rebounding advantage and forced 24 turnovers leading to 27 points. They also outscored McKendree in the paint 38-18.
