Men's Soccer - Season in Review

Over the course of the rest of the spring and the summer months, one Tiffin Athletics program will be highlighted every Saturday on their accomplishments during the year. This week's Saturday Spotlight focuses on the men's soccer program.

Looking to build off of their 2019 GMAC regular-season and tournament championships, Tiffin was ranked 18th in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll in early August. The Dragons were also picked by the conference coaches to win the GMAC for the second-straight season.

After a scoreless tie against Alderson Broaddus to open the season, Tiffin picked up their first win on Sept. 7 as Leo Hasenstab's hat trick led to a 3-0 victory over Illinois-Springfield. For his efforts, Hasenstab was named GMAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Tiffin picked up another nonconference win with a 1-0 victory over Northwood on Sept. 15 before opening GMAC play with a 2-0 shutout of Findlay on Sept. 18. After their third-straight win, a 3-1 road decision over Trevecca Nazarene, both Hasenstab and goalkeeper Dylan Morris earned GMAC Player of the Week honors and the Dragons rose to 21st in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches rankings.

TU would then suffer their first loss of the season at Lake Erie, but bounced back by defeating Trevecca Nazarene and Kentucky Wesleyan by a combined score of 14-0 on Oct. 3 and 5. Joel Daly picked up a Defensive Player of the Week nod from the GMAC following those two victories.

The Dragons followed that up with another victory, defeating Ohio Dominican 4-1. Cedarville broke the win streak with a 2-1 win over Tiffin on Oct. 12, and the Dragons suffered back-to-back losses for the only time all season with a 1-0 loss to AB five days later. After that, Tiffin tied Ohio Valley 2-2 and fell again to Lake Erie 1-0.

On October 31, the Dragons were able to right the ship and clinch a GMAC postseason berth with a 3-0 shutout on the road at Walsh, but battled Malone and Findlay to draws to end the regular season and fall to the 4-seed in the conference tournament.

Despite the struggles to end the regular season, Tiffin roared back in a huge way in the playoffs, earning three thrilling wins with a 2-1 victory over Walsh in the quarterfinals, a 2-1 double-overtime revenge win over Lake Erie in the semifinals, and a 1-0 defeat of Cedarville in the championship to send the Dragons into the NCAA Tournament. After the quarterfinals, Abdoul Magid Sy was named GMAC Offensive Player of the Week, and after the title weekend, Caleb Gibbons earned Offensive Player of the Week honors while Pace Thomas garnered the Defensive nod

The Dragons' momentum would not hold in the NCAA postseason, however, as Tiffin was blanked 1-0 on the road at Maryville in the opener.

Leo Hasenstab and Joel Daly both earned First Team All-GMAC honors, while Odun Obebe notched an Honorable Mention selection. Hasenstab and Daly each also picked up a pair of All-Region awards from the United Soccer Coaches and the D2CCA.
