Tiffin University (1-0) opened its 2018 season with a narrow 1-0 victory over visiting Slippery Rock, scoring a goal late in the first half and making it stand up through a close second half.
Both teams battled back and forth throughout the opening 45 minutes, with Tiffin holding a clear edge in shots 12-3. But most of the shots were not on goal and the half looked to be heading to a scoreless tie.
Then Abdoul Magid Sy worked some magic, streaking down the near sideline and chipping a long shot over the head of the goalkeeper with just 7 seconds left in the half, giving TU a 1-0 lead heading to the break.
The Rock refused to allow another goal in the second half and kept up the pressure, still trailing 8-5 in shots but making TU goalkeeper Dylan Morris make 2 saves and keeping TU's defense on their toes with some other near misses.
The Dragons controlled most of the tempo, ultimately outshooting Slippery Rock 20-8 and holding a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Morris got the win in goal, making 2 saves in the shutout victory.
