Storm Pull Away Late, Hold Off Dragons

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Tiffin men's basketball threatened the upset of Lake Erie for most of Saturday's game, but the Storm pulled away late to take a 78-66 victory.

Austin Adams led the Dragons with 18 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Shane Waldon just missed a double-double with 16 and nine. Austin Schaub (13) and Joshua Williams (12) were also in double figures.

Tiffin was able to force five more turnovers than they committed (17-12), but Lake Erie had more success turning them into points at a margin of 20-11. Tiffin shot 40% both from the field (26-65) and from beyond the arc (6-15).

Both teams started slow, as the Dragons and Storm were tied at just 11 apiece at the second media timeout with 11:34 to play in the first-half.

A Shane Waldon hook and Austin Schaub triple gave Tiffin a 16-14 advantage, but the Storm responded with seven in a row to go up by five with just under seven minutes to play in the period.

The Dragons countered with a 7-0 run of their own, as Austin Adams' layup put the Dragons up 23-21. The Storm bounced back to retake the lead, but Schaub was able to beat the buzzer on a sweet backdoor cut to tie the game at 32 heading into halftime.

In the opening period, the Dragons shot 42.4% from the field, but went 4-7 (57.1%) from deep as Waldon and Schaub each had 10 points at the break.

Lake Erie was able to build a lead midway through the second-half, but a thunderous dunk in transition by Waldon followed by a triple from Adams tied the game at 51 apiece with 9:22 to play. The Storm would come back with a big run to take their biggest lead of the game of nine though, 74-65, with just over two minutes remaining.

The Storm added a couple free throws before the final buzzer, taking the 78-66 win.

The Dragons now return home for the first time since Dec. 14 as they host Davis & Elkins College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
