Dragons Cap 6-2 Spring Break Trip With 5-1 Win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Tiffin baseball continued their historic start to the season on Sunday, wrapping up the Spring Break swing with a 5-1 victory over Wayne State (Neb.) to improve to 9-2 on the year.

The 9-2 start is the best for the program in its Division II era, and the Dragons have now won 17 of their last 21 games dating back to early May of last season.

Tiffin got on the scoreboard early in this morning's contest, picking up one run in the first before Kole Klasic knocked a two-RBI triple to right in the second to give Tiffin a 3-0 lead.

Wayne State got their run in the bottom of the third, cutting the deficit to two, but TU would play some add-on late with an RBI single from Nick Whetnall and Jake Shier bringing home a run on a fielder's choice to take the 5-1 win.

Once again, Tiffin's pitching was nearly untouchable, as the trio of Michael Ross, Tyler Wehrle, and Gunnar Boehm allowed just one unearned run on five hits with 15 strikeouts. Ross threw the first four frames, allowing two hits and striking out half of the hitters he faced (eight). Wehrle went 4.1 innings in relief to earn the win and improve to 3-0 on the season, striking out six, and Boehm sealed the win with the final two outs of the ninth inning.

Klasic was a perfect 4-4 on the day with the two RBI, and Kyle Vance also picked up a pair of hits for Tiffin.

Through 11 games, the Dragons are doing it both at the plate and on the mound, sporting a .307 team batting average and a 2.34 staff ERA. Tiffin has 31 extra-base hits while only allowing 13 and has outscored opponents 69-35. Pitchers are also averaging 11.16 strikeouts per nine innings, with 119 thus far on the year.

After a phenomenal showing in the nonconference to open the season, Tiffin will now look to keep the momentum going into conference play, hosting Walsh for four games next weekend to start GMAC action.
