Dragons Sweep Cavaliers, Clinch Postseason Berth

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Tiffin baseball took a pair of games from Walsh 7-1 and 10-4 to close out regular-season play on Saturday afternoon, doing exactly what they needed to do to earn a berth in the 2019 Great Midwest Baseball Championship.

The Dragons finish with a 17-15 mark in conference play, sending them into a tie with Alderson Broaddus, who entered the day in seventh in the GMAC standings. However, Tiffin took three of four from AB during the season, so they hold the tiebreaker with the Battlers. Hillsdale came into today's action eighth, but fell in both of their games against Ohio Dominican, moving to 15-15 and two games back of TU. Even if the Chargers are able to sweep ODU in their final two games tomorrow and enter into a tie with the Dragons, Tiffin also holds the tiebreaker with them by virtue of a 3-1 season series advantage, so TU will finish in seventh-place in the GMAC regular season standings.

In today's games, the Dragons outscored the Cavaliers 17-5 and registered 25 total hits, including four home runs.

Tiffin jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game one on a John Heckman RBI groundout, but Walsh answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie things at one.

The Dragons managed to scrape together a couple of runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead, but really broke things open in the fifth as Cody Orr led off with a solo homer and Jack Dennis launch a two-run bomb to put TU up 6-1. Tiffin tacked one more run on in the seventh on a Nich Green RBI single, and that would be more than enough as the Dragons won 7-1.

To go with his home run, Orr also pitched a great game, going the full seven innings and allowing just one unearned run on five hits while striking out six to earn his fourth win of the season.

Tiffin's power surge continued early in game two, with Heckman launching a two-run shot in the first and Kole Klasic connecting for a three-run blast in the second to put the Dragons up 5-0.

Walsh cut the lead to two with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but TU answered right back in the top of the fifth with a Heckman RBI single and Dennis RBI double to go up 7-3.

Before the final out was recorded, the Dragons added on three more runs to earn the 10-4 victory. Jake Monnin started on the mound and gave up three runs in 3.2 innings, while Aaron George got the win in long relief, tossing 5.1 frames of one-run ball.

Heckman had great game at the plate, going 4-5 with the homer and four RBI. Klasic also tallied four RBI on two hits, while Brayden Callihan recorded three hits and scored three times.

With the seven-seed locked up, the Dragons now wait to find out their opponent in next week's GMAC tournament.
