The Tiffin University baseball team got back on the winning side of things on Wednesday afternoon, taking a pair of games from the Lake Erie Storm 9-0 and 13-6.
Game One
Michael Boswell was the man for the job in game one, climbing the hill in search of his third win of the season. His offense gave him a cushion from the start, using a Devon Fisk sacrifice fly to make it a 1-0 game. In the 3rd, Tiffin's Kyle Lento was hit by a pitch to put one on with two outs. Devon Fisk then drilled a ball to the deepest part of the park that sailed over the fence for a two run home run.
Boswell kept mowing down the Storm, allowing only three hits through four innings of work. The Tiffin bats rattled again in the 5th, adding a run on Kyle Lento's sacrifice fly to give the Dragons a 4-0 advantage.
The fatal frame for the Storm came in the 6th, as the Dragons scored five times to put the game out of reach. With two outs, Brayden Callihan singled to center field, scoring Durham and Perry to put Tiffin up 6-0. Then Kyle Lento flexed his muscle with a blast to center field for a three run dinger.
Boswell cruised through the remaining innings, tossing a complete game shutout, the first of his career. Michael allowed four hits, walked a batter, and fanned nine. Offensively, Tiffin banged out eight hits and received four free passes on their way to nine runs. Individually, Kurt Barbeau finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored, and Brayden Callihan was 2 for 3 with two runs batted in. Kyle Lento led the Dragons with four runs batted in, three coming on his bomb to center field.
Game Two
The offensive beat rolled on in game two, as Tiffin once more feasted on Lake Erie pitching.
The top of the 1st was another crooked number for Tiffin, taking a 1-0 lead on a solo blast to center field off the bat of Jay Smith. In the 3rd, back-to-back singles placed runners at first and second. Fernando Nieto wiped the slate clean with a slicing double down the right field line to put Tiffin ahead 3-0. The scoring wasn't done yet for Tiffin in the 3rd, plating a run on an error to push their fourth run of the game across.
It took Lake Erie a while to dent the scoreboard, nine innings to be exact, but they finally did with a solo home run to trail 4-1 after two innings of play.
Isaac Perry made his presence felt in the 4th, leading off the frame with a no doubt about it shot to left field to put the good guys ahead 5-1. The Storm plated another run in the bottom of the 4th to once again trail by three runs at 5-2.
The Dragons fired back in the 5th, taking advantage of a Lake Erie error to score their sixth run of the game. The Storm closed the gap again, scoring two runs on two hits, an error, and a wild pitch to trail 6-4. In the 6th, a Lake Erie single to right field tied the score at 6-6.
Tiffin waited until the very last minute to put the game away, plating seven runs in the top of the 9th. Lento rolled another Yahtzee to lead off the inning going out the front door with a home run to center field. Isaac Perry picked up a run batted in with a double, and Brayden Callihan singled Perry home to put Tiffin up 9-6. Jack Dennis played long ball with a three run home run to right field, and Barbeau went back-to-back with Dennis greeting the Storm's new relief pitcher with a blast to right field to cap the scoring at 13-6.
On the mound, Kevin Borst earned the win, hurling two innings in relief. At the plate, Isaac Perry finished 3 for 5 with two runs batted in, Jay Smith collected three hits and a run batted in, and Fernando Nieto chipped in with two hits and two RBI's. Jack Dennis was the leading run producer, driving in four runs.
The sweep gets Tiffin on the right side of .500 at 18-17 overall. In GLIAC play, Tiffin is now 10-8.
