Dragons edged by Lakers in 11 innings

The Tiffin University baseball team dropped a close game on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 in extra innings.

Tiffin took the lead in the 1st, taking advantage of sloppy Laker defense. Kurt Barbeau was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, and moved to second when Devon Fisk reached on an error by the center fielder. A 5-3 double play threatened to end TU's scoring opportunity, but Alec McCurry delivered, singling Fisk home to lead 1-0.

Starting pitcher Tyler Nichols shutout the Lakers through four innings, but surrendered a single run in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game at 1-1.

Nichols held Grand Valley at bay for 7 1/3 innings, surrendering only one run, while striking out four, but sadly received only one run of support. The Dragons threatened in the top of the 9th, advancing the go ahead run to third with two outs, but were unable to cross the plate.

The game moved to extra innings, and Grand Valley came close to ending the game in the 10th, stranding the bases loaded. Tiffin went quietly in the top of the 11th, but the Lakers were not so soft spoken, pushing the winning run home with a walk, sacrifice bunt, and a single.

Patrick Bellinger took the loss in relief, hurling three innings, surrendering a run while scattering four hits. Offensively, Tiffin managed only five hits, with Alec McCurry finishing 2 for 5 with a run batted in.

The Dragons fall to 20-28 overall and 11-19 in GLIAC play.
