Dragons split with late rally

The Tiffin University baseball team hosted the Lake Erie Storm on Friday, losing game one 3-1, but rallying for a 6-3 game two win.

Game One

The Storm struck first, crossing the plate in the top of the 1st with two hits and a run scoring error. The Dragons tied the score in the 2nd with a pair of hits. Garrett Vernau singled with one out, and stole second an out later. Kyle Lento drew a walk to put two on with two out, and Alec McCurry delivered a run scoring single to center field to drive home Vernau.

Tiffin starter Kyle Montell held Lake Erie scoreless for the remainder of his appearance, tossing four innings before turning to the bullpen. Weylin Frisbie entered the game in the 5th, and was greeted rather rudely by the Storm. After hitting a batter and then throwing a wild pitch to move the runner into scoring position, Frisbie surrendered a single to center field to give Lake Erie a 2-1 advantage. Another run crossed for the Storm in the 6th, due in part to a throwing error to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

The Dragons put a scare into the Storm in the 7th, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with only one out, thanks to a single by Isaac Perry, a Devon Fisk walk, and a wild pitch. Needing a base hit in the worse way, the Dragons were turned away, stranding their 12th and 13th runner of the game to fall 3-1.

Weylin Frisbie took the loss on the mound, but pitched a solid three innings in relief. The offense was led by Alec McCurry, finishing 3 for 4 with a run batted in. Kyle Durham and Devon Fisk each finished with a pair of hits and a walk.

Game Two

TU fell behind early in game two, surrendering a double and a single to trail 1-0 halfway through the 1st inning. The Dragons countered in the 2nd inning, scoring a run to bring the score to a 1-1 tie. Singles by Isaac Perry and Devon Fisk put two runners on, and Garrett Vernau collected the RBI with a bouncer to Lake Erie's second baseman.

The Storm regained the lead in the 3rd with a run, and crossed the plate again in the 4th to hold a 3-1 advantage. That all changed in the bottom of the 5th. With one out, Kyle Lento doubled. A strikeout pulled the Storm an out closer to stranding Lento, but Kurt Barbeau reached on an error to put runners at 1st and 3rd. Nick Hueneburg walked to the plate, needing to find a hole in the defense to plate a run, and after seeing five consecutive curve balls, he found it. Nick hammered the 6th straight breaking ball of the at bat into a stiff breeze, clearing the 365 sign in left center field to give the Dragons a 4-3 lead.

Tiffin added a pair of insurance runs in the 8th. A Lake Erie error on Vernau's ground ball to third allowed Hueneburg to score, and Fernando Nieto singled home Kyle Durham to push TU in front 6-3.

Brady Ward relieved starter Luke Fraley, tossing 1 2/3 innings before Patrick Bellinger was summoned. Bellinger nailed down his 4th save, striking out the final hitter of the day with the bases loaded.

Luke Fraley earned the win, pitching 7 innings, scattering six hits and striking out four. Nick Hueneburg propelled the Dragons offense, collecting three hits and three runs batted in while scoring two runs.

The split moves the Dragons to 16-26 overall and 7-17 in GLIAC play.
