Dragons Top Oilers in Double OT

The Tiffin University women's soccer team picked up a much needed win on Sunday, defeating the University of Findlay Oilers 2-1 in double overtime.

Tiffin took an early lead in the 1st half, striking in the 28th minute. Leanne Tobin smacked a shot that bounced off the Oilers' goalkeeper to Tiffin's Adrianna Currie. Currie controlled the rebound, and fired a shot into the back of the net to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, the Oilers tied the contest with a shot from the top of the box.

At the half, Findlay held a commanding lead in shots 19-3. Findlay also attempted seven corner kicks, while the Dragons were held without an attempt.

Tiffin seemed to get stronger as the 2nd half moved along, but the shots just couldn't find the net. Tiffin was denied on all six shots in the 2nd half. Defensively, Tiffin stifled the Oilers, stopping all 11 2nd half Findlay shot attempts.

Neither team could find pay dirt in the first overtime, with a total of five shots in the ten minute period. As time continued to tick away in the 2nd overtime, it looked as if the Dragons and Oilers were going to play to a draw, but a through ball from Adrianna Currie to Alli McCabe was the difference. McCabe controlled the pass and zipped a shot past the diving keeper to give Tiffin a 2-1 victory.

Offensively, Currie had a strong game, collecting three points on an assist and a goal. Defensively, Tiffin allowed 34 shots, 17 on goal, but the Tiffin goalkeeper, Samantha Ortenzi, kept her team in the game with 15 saves.

The Dragons move to 2-10 overall and 1-5 in the GLIAC. The Dragons will host the Northwood Timberwolves on October 14, and then will welcome in the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals.
