Another weekend, another set of dominant victories on the mat for Tiffin University's wrestling team.
TU went unbeaten at the Regional Duals hosted at Belmont Abbey, posting a 6-0 mark with four more dual wins on Saturday. TU beat four ranked squads on the weekend, including 13th ranked Newberry and 22nd ranked King. On day two, TU dispatched Queens 43-9, Belmont Abbey 27-19, Coker 39-15, and Limestone 30-13.
Against Queens, TU posted 6 pins in their 8 victories. Rico Puente got the first pin in 6:49 at 133 pounds and was followed by two more falls, as Bryan LaVearn (141) won in 1:04 and Collin Adkins (149) won in 5:52. Other pins came from Mateo Lybarger (165) in 1:59, Hayden Bronne (184) in 1:05, and Nicholas Mason (197) in 2:01.
Other wins for TU included Giuseppe Penzone (125) by a 15-9 score and Beau Minnick (157) by a 15-2 major decision.
Next up was Belmont Abbey. Leading 15-13 with three matches to go, the Dragons put the win away with two pins by Bronne (0:40) and Mason (0:43).
Penzone won 15-4 to open scoring for TU, with Adkins getting TU back on track after two straight losses with a 11-3 win. Minnick eked out a 7-6 win next, while Lybarger posted a major decision 19-5 to put TU back on top.
The Dragons finished the day in powerful fashion, as they dispatched nationally ranked Coker in a match that saw them post 6 pins in 7 victories.
TU opened with three straight falls, as Penzone won in 1:48, Puente won in 4:34, and LaVearn won in 2:26. After a narrow 3-1 loss by Adkins, Minnick responded with his own narrow 3-2 victory.
Richard Screptock then continued the pin parade with a fall in 4:47. Bronne overwhelmed his opponent in just 23 seconds, and Mason got the final win for TU in 3:20.
In the day's final dual, TU got four straight wins in the final weight classes to finish off nationally ranked Limestone 30-13.
After Penzone picked up a DQ win, the Dragons dropped two matches. Adkins got them back on track with a 14-3 major decision, while Minnick won another close one 4-3. After a loss by fall, the Dragons exploded for four straight wins. Chase Boyd (174) edged out a 6-5 win, Bronne (1:14) and Mason (4:59) got yet more wins via fall, and Chase Carter (285) pulled out a 5-3 win in sudden victory.
