Grine, Bronne win titles at Intercollegiate Open

Tiffin University had 8 placers out of 10 weight classes, including two champions, as the Dragons competed at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open.

Trey Grine (149) and Hayden Bronne (184) both placed first at the event, dominating their weight class. Grine posted a pin over Case Western in 2:53 and followed that with a 17-0 win over Mercyhurst. After a medical forfeit win over Mercyhurst, he won the title with a pin in 2:57 over Niagara.

Bronne, meanwhile, had two quick pins over Cleveland State (:33) and Case Western (1:51), then posted a 4-3 decision over Notre Dame and a 18-12 win over Cleveland State for the title.

Two Dragons earned second place finishes. Bruce Hrynciw (125) opened with a pin in 1:18 over West Liberty and a big 17-1 score over Mercyhurst, then reached the championship with a pin in 4:25 over West Liberty. He just missed a title, falling 8-7 to West Liberty.

Nicholas Mason (197) also took second, beating Ohio 9-3, Mercyhurst 11-8, and West Liberty 11-6. He then lost via pin in the championship to Ashland in 2:56.

Collin Adkins (141) finished 3rd, defeating West Liberty 8-3 and pinning Ashland in 4:22. After falling 11-3 to Notre Dame, he won the third place match 8-5 over Ashland.

Richard Screptock (165) placed 5th. He opened with a 6-0 win over Niagara and a 18-6 win over Mercyhurst. After falling to Notre Dame 8-5, he bounced back with two pins over Notre Dame (1:40) and Ashland (4:00). He then won the fifth place match 12-4 over Notre Dame.

Caleb Fry (285) was 6th, getting a 5-2 win over Otterbein before falling 12-4 to Ashland. After winning by pin in 46 seconds against West Liberty, he won 15-5 before falling in his final match 8-4.

David Henson (285) also placed 8th. He lost via pin in 2:55 but bounced back with a pin in 2:00 against Ohio University and a 5-3 win over Tiffin's Austin Winegarner. He lost his last two matches via pins.

Also posting wins on the day were Giuseppe Penzone at 133 (3-0 over Ashland), Derek Gross at 157 (15-10 over Notre Dame), Zachary Bierfeldt at 165 (16-0 over Otterbein, 18-2 over Niagara), and Winegarner at 285 (pin in 1:31 over West Liberty).
