Trey Grine had a strong showing at the Michigan State Open, finishing 3rd at 149 pounds as Tiffin opened its 2017-18 wrestling season.
Grine posted wins of 10-7 over Arizona State and 3-2 over Michigan before falling 8-0 to Northwestern. He then bounced back with a 7-4 win before winning by rule over Arizona State for third place.
Other Dragons getting multiple wins in the Open division were Matteo Lybarger at 165 (5-4 over Notre Dame, pin in 6:05, 11-6 decision). Also posting victories were Rico Puente (133) 13-3 over Notre Dame; Giuseppe Penzone (133) 6-1 decision; Richard Screptock (165) 13-0 over Davenport; Chase Carter (285) 8-6 sudden victory over Wisconsin; and Caleb Fry (285) 3-2 over Carter of TU.
In the Freshman/Sophomore division, winners were Collin Adkins (141) 9-4 over Michigan, 12-4 over Michigan State; Bryan LaVearn (141) 8-0 over Purdue, 7-4 Michigan State; and Zachary Bierfeldt (165) 16-0 over Manchester, 13-4 over Indiana.
