Sydney Bourquin has announced her intention to continue her athletic and academic careers at Tiffin University.
Bourquin is a 5'9" guard out of Jonathan Alder High School, and is from Plain City, Ohio. At the conclusion of her junior season, Bourquin's well-rounded career averages were 12.5 points per game, 6.5 assists per game, 4.9 steals per game, and 4.1 rebounds per game.
"Sydney is a driven, dedicated player who's always looking to get better," said Bourquin's high school coach, Steve Cawley. "A great combo guard who sees the floor so well, but beyond that, an excellent young lady who will make the Dragon program proud as she has made the Jonathan Alder program proud in the past three years. We will miss her but certainly Tiffin has gotten a great young lady."
Bourquin has already had a decorated high school career in just three seasons. Her freshman year, she was named Honorable Mention All-MOAC. During her sophomore season, she earned Team MVP honors, First Team All-CBC, First Team All-Central District, Honorable Mention All-Metro, and Special Mention All-Ohio for Division II. Last year as a junior, she was a team captain and received Team Co-MVP honors, First Team All-CBC, First Team All-Central District, Special Mention All-Ohio, and finished first in Ohio Division II in assists.
"I've known Sydney since she was in 7th grade, and it's always been a joy to coach her," said AAU coach Brock Oakes of the Capital City Comets. "She has a great support system. She loves the game, works hard, and has always been dedicated to getting better and improving her game. I'm happy for Sydney that she will have the opportunity to continue playing the game she loves, at a school like Tiffin where she will receive a great education. The Dragons have gotten a great player, teammate, and person in Sydney, and I'm excited to watch her grow in this next chapter of her life."
"I've watched Sydney develop throughout her years within our program since she was in middle school," said fellow Comets coach Joe Fowler. "Sydney is the ultimate teammate, will be outworked by no-one, is very coachable, and has an extremely high basketball IQ. She is a great role model for the younger kids in our program and she's the full package as a true student-athlete. I am so excited for Tiffin and for Sydney."
During her high school career, Bourquin has set Jonathan Alder records for steals in a game with 12, assists in a game with 12, assists in a season with 155, and three-pointers in a game with six. Prior to her senior year, she was also just 15 assists away from the school career record and 174 points from reaching the 1,000 career points milestone.
On why she chose to become a Dragon, Bourquin said, "I chose TU because I felt that it was the best fit for me academically and athletically. I loved the supportive atmosphere and unity of all of the student-athletes. The coaching staff and team are awesome and so welcoming. They have a great program that I could really see myself being a part of."
Academically, Bourquin is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, has earned a Scholar-Athlete award, and has been on the honor roll every quarter of high school with a 3.7 weighted GPA.
