Tiffin University (27-28) posted a big 9-4 win over Northwood to open their second day at the GLIAC Tournament but could not keep Saginaw Valley State off the board, losing 9-1 in 6 innings to close out their season.
In the opener, the Dragons blew open a close game with 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to make a winner of April Bennett. Bennett tossed the final 4 innings in relief of Kimmy Reynolds, allowing just 4 hits and one earned run. Reynolds opened with 3 innings of work, allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits.
Tiffin opened scoring in the first inning. Jamie Sevenish singled, stole second, and was sacrificed to third before Brooke Lambert singled her home. Lindsay Graves then doubled and came home on Gabrielle Hess's single to give TU a 2-0 lead.
With the score tied 2-2 in the third, Graves roped a triple and came home on Hess's sacrifice fly to put TU up on top by a run. The Timberwolves tied the score again and in the fourth inning, Sevenish singled with two out. Errors at third base and right field allowed her to score as TU went back up 4-3. But again Northwood immediately responded to tie the score 4-4.
The Dragons bats exploded in the sixth. Hayley Kobie singled and Ally Rock reached on a fielder's choice and moved up a base on an error at third. Sierra Besser-Paul then singled both of them home to get the scoring started. Sevenish and Libby Crow both singled to load the bases. Lambert then singled home a run, as did Graves. Chloe Swaisgood then finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Bennett finished off the Timberwolves in the 7th for the win.
Game two against the Cardinals was a different story. SVSU got two runs in the second and three more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Dragons got a run back in the 6th as Crow doubled and came home on Lambert's single. But it all fell apart in the bottom of the frame as two Tiffin errors along with a wild pitch led to 4 unearned runs as SVSU ended the game after six innings.
Tiffany Snell took the loss, starting and pitching 2 innings while allowing 2 earned runs. Bennett pitched the next 1.2 innings and allowed 3 earned runs, while Reynolds finished up with 2 innings.
Overall Crow led the way with 4 hits in the two games. Sevenish had 3 hits against Northwood, while Graves also had 3 hits with a double and triple.
